molex wiring issue
« on: July 06, 2012, 02:23:48 PM »
An issue I have had will re-pinning and changing to molex plugs is when the old plug has two wires to the same pin (jumpers etc). It is very difficult to slot in two wires into a molex pin; for me anyway.

Is there any problem with say splicing and soldering the second wire into the the other and pinning only the spliced wire?

It should be OK, but ifyou think it may be a high current draw item, eg a coil, you may want to join the two wires to a heavier guage wire and put that in the pin, just to make sure.
Lets go Brandon!

I solder the 2 wires together then crimp, then add some solder to the wire and the pin to be sure. I don't try and crimp the insulation when i do this. just the conductor.

There is another thread on this somewhere on the forum with a few other methods.

I have currently done this but I don't like the result. It's for j115 I think (they are all yellow wires on the t2) where the wires are a bit thicker than say the GI wires. So I find the pin doesn't seat well inside the connector because there is no room for the thickness of two wires. I can tug the pin out with little force. That's why I thought I'd ask for some opinions.

Thanks guys

I have done this many times and never have a problem. (of course when i first started doing it, it took a couple of goes to get it right but once i got the method right i didn't have any problems)
there are a few tricks to it though, if the pin is coming out that means the little lug that keeps it in is not engaging properly, try bending this out a little bit so it catches on the plastic properly.
If i get a chance today I will do up a guide, take some photos and put it on my web site and in the hints and tips section on this forum.

Where this connector is concerned J115 ,molex is not the better option, buy a black IDC connector, resolder the wires with heatshrink back into a loop and use one of these,If you are concerned about the connector burning go and clean you light sockets and replace any black marbleized globes

Thanks mate, but does this mean I need a tool to push the wires in. I have a few idc plugs lying around but nothing to force the wires in.

What is required?

which ever way you decide to go you must ensure the connection between the wire and the connector and the connector and header is done properly or else you will have problems.

The maximum current a Trifurcon connector pin is rated at is 7 amps, the Pancon black IDC is rated at 12.5Amps,   !!@ (the wank icon is aimed at the person who wrote the Pancon specifications and not towards any member of this site)  but the Black high temperature headers used with 18 Gauge wire and with Phos Bronze coating are rated at 7 Amps so a 12.5 Amp rated connector between the wire and the connector has no real advantage ( remember we only have a 5 amp fuse on the wpc G.I. circuits in a fuse holder rated at 15 amps and I even have seen these melted and burned ). it all comes down to how good the connection is. None of the specifications state weather they are peak or RMS ratings either.

I had the pcb melt around a fuse it got that hot. The fuse kept going and the only thing that alerted me was the smell of fire. I think I posted a picture of the fuse ages ago. The smell of smoke will generally get a person thinking something is wrong and turn off the game  %.%
