Firepower Sys6A randomly locks Left Kicker
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:58:26 PM »
Hi Guys got some gremlins creeping into My Firepower,

Machines have all recently been moved too but already checked all the obvious things related to that hopefully...

FP seems to randomly lock the left kicker on Machine turn on,

and does some bizzare things with the sound too will play, none, some then all sounds ...not sure if related to kicker..

turn it off ,unplug solenoid Header, test transistor, its fine, replug and its fine again for another 20 games or a few more off and ons before the whole cycle repeats.. !@#

anyone had this before on a sys 6?

I have an intermittent fault with the sound on my Firepower which started earlier this year .
Symptoms are no backround sounds and it plays one of the phrases when ball closes one of the Fire lane switces and sometimes also plays the wrong sounds when doing this .

I haven't investigated why as yet cause it tends to come good after a few games when it does do this .

Has the 40 pin interconnector been replaced on yours ? Mine has .
I need more room ! and more $$$

Hey Mate,

Yeah I had done a fair bit of work on these boards originally to get the machine going again after it sitting in a warehouse in europe for 20 years....

Not real sure on this one sounds like a 74** series chip or PIA possibly...

keep you posted...

Check the connector(s) for the switch matrix. Sounds more like the diode across the sling leaf switch ? Does the problem persist during gameplay ?

if it has any of the old style I.C. sockets make sure you replace them, they are renowned for problems.
they come in all different sizes and colours the photos are just an example.

these where left in the board because they aren't used for the game the board was installed in but the one on the ram chip was not changed and this board has intermittent faults

Just to echo Beaky...

If you can easily remove a chip from a socket with your fingers, it's lost tension and won't hold the chip good enough to be reliable.

If you can twist the chip in the socket, and the game locks up, the socket needs replaced.

Replace them.

Hi Guys Thanks for the hints,

i did restore the boards that included deleting the scanbe sockets etc and redoing the edge connector.

It doesnt seem to be in gameplay but only when first turned on..

If i remove the solenoid connector then reattach it seems to come good for awhile,,strange indeed.....

how is the power supply?

I would be checking all the components and solder joints related to the special solenoids.

Yeah probably time to pull the board again and have a closer look...

Doesnt actually lock the Cpu just one kicker..

checked the switch matrix too seems ok on the switch test nothing locked on but pretty random could still be a diode I guess.. !@#

the special solenoids switches won't show up in the switch matrix test if i am right.
When the special switch is closed it will go directly to the driver board and switch on the special solenoid, when the special solenoid is energised it then closes the switch in the switch matrix.
hope that makes that makes sense
