sega dmdisplay repair, wanted new flex ribbon cabble
« on: August 12, 2012, 10:21:40 PM »
The sega dmd repair went bad.I could not remove the old flex ribbon without removing the conductive layer. It stayed soldered/stuck to the board. So now i am trying to find a source of flex ribbon to replace it with.I have the conductive tape, now, but no ribbon. The ribbon is 64 way 1 mm conductor width and 1 mm spacing.Any leads would be greatfully accepted.damien

i had an outgased dmd in the shed so i retrieved it and it has a source of flex ribbon. All i have to work out now is how to "bare" the conductors without destroying the very thin plastic ribbon.maybee abrasion.! any thoughts on this would be help full as i don't have much to practice with. ^&^

Gently run a stanley knife across the end of the ribbon, about 5mm in from the end, do it firm enought to cut into the insulation, but not too firm that it cuts into the wire inside. (maybe practice on the BAD ribbon to get a 'feel' for it.).
This will create the 'starter cut' (weakening the plastic insulation).

Then, use small sidecutters and GENTLY close the blades of the cutters into the cut from the knife and pull the cutters away from the end, thus stripping of the 5mm plastic ends. (hope that made sense).
You need to focus more on pulling the cutters away, rather then closing them tight which would cut right thru the wire...it's an aquired skill, so practice practice practice.....
