Title: Getaway - High Speed 2 Resoration WIP
Post by: Supremicus on October 20, 2009, 05:26:13 PM
Well needed a new project so when a getaway project pin came up i couldn't resist since it's one i've wanted for awhile. Appears to be some water damage or something on the front with the previous owner doing some weird repair job as seen down the page. So far i've only found a couple of wear spots, so when i get that far i'll see if i can get some suggestions on how to repair them. Judging by how much dirt and cigarette ash i've found in the playfield while stripping it down so far makes me wonder if it had ever been cleaned.

Playfield before i started stripping and part progress of stripping.

That should clean up very nicely....I used a TreasureCove kit on my Getaway playfield and it gave very good results (mine is in resto section here).

Re the front panel...Hmm.  I would assume you're planning on decaling the machine?  If so, I depending on level of damage might be too much to fill.  If the coin door piece can be removed cleanly, maybe worth taking to a cabinet maker to see if they can make a new one?  Or if you're handy on the tools DIY!

Now that what I call a "project" - I'd be looking to replace the front and bottom panels if possible as per Marty's suggestion.

Playfield looks nice !

Yeah once i've finished pulling the playfield out the cab is going into the shed to see what i can do, most likely i'll knock the front off and cut a new one.

Great fun game and I love cheat mania!

Got too dark over at the machine to finish stripping the playfield so figured i'd camp infront of the tv and start polishing the supercharger ramps. Looks so much better than the lovely tarnished dirty look it had before.

Coming along nice-I'll be interested to see how you tackle the front panel.

Cab decals turned up this morning, so it was enough to motivate me to get the playfield and harness out this afternoon so i could get started on the cab. Dosn't the cpu board look yummy, i think i'll bite the bullet and get a new one (amazingly the machine ran fine). Getting the playfield out allowed me to see what the metal plate on the front of the cab was for, as you can see theres a nice chunk of wood missing completely, looks like i'll be making a whole new front.

Decals look good.  I assuming you'll use a coin door filler when installing?  Its a must have!

BTW it looks like someone actually used a jig saw to cut around to get the old door off?  Novel way if you loose the key!..

Post by: Supremicus on October 22, 2009, 06:18:18 PM
Yeah marty i'll get a new coin door, more concerned about fixing the cab first. Pic of the plate and door taken off.

That front panel looks like be a REALLY big challenge, but I'm sure it will work out well. Just take your time !

The CPU board looks like it has had a few repairs !

Post by: Supremicus on October 23, 2009, 11:46:18 PM
Shouldn't be too bad a job provided i can get 18mm plywood in town, which i see as the bigger problem so hopefully mitre 10 or home hardware will have some when i look tomorrow. Then its just a matter of removing the old piece, cutting the new piece, getting the joints right then attaching it. Cabinet is bare right now, just have to detach the backbox. The sub is absolutely perished so i'll just have to put up with the pinball pro speaker kit (sarcasm :P) after hearing the difference of it in my dr who i'd love to put the kit in every dmd i buy.

Looks to have had alot of moisture in the cab at some stage. Whats under the PF look like?
Ranex time!
Title: Re: Getaway - High Speed 2 Resoration WIP
Post by: Supremicus on October 24, 2009, 12:33:46 AM
Under the pf is the cleanest part of the whole machine, only the usual dirt from the coils etc other than that no damage. The sides will be an easy patch up, just looks like it was dragged around alot without any legs on.

Looks like whomever hacked the front of the cab removed the divider that goes behind the cashbox too! I am looking forward to viewing your progress!
Title: Re: Getaway - High Speed 2 Resoration WIP
Post by: Supremicus on October 26, 2009, 06:24:59 PM
Yeah john, i'll most likely cut a new divider out while the front is off so i can maneuver it in since theres some give in the walls atm.

Not much to show right now but i've started cutting out the new front panel, almost sits flush but theres some little bits from the old front stuck on the walls that i need to trim off. Stopped for the day it's way too overcast right now to see well in the shed. Oh nino did you have the guide on cutting new angled blocks for the legs ? Think i remember seeing something on AA about it a long time ago.

Outstanding !

Using the "wet" method - Do you apply a sealer or clear coat to the bare wood ?

Yeah nino theres a guide at http://www.robertwinter.com/pinball/restorations/cc/cabinet/index.html only difference is i use a water based varnish instead since it has a much quicker drying time and easier cleanup.

Title: Re: Getaway - High Speed 2 Resoration WIP

Mines gone (worn right out).  AFAIK on all WMS WPC games ontop of the back box was the smaller sticker with s/n on it - identical to those on the driver board and CPU.  If all yours are missing I'll remove one and scan for you.

Ah the tiny warranty void if removed sticker, yeah it's only on a couple of my boards. none on the backbox whatsoever. I'll redo it tomorrow should be a quick job.

mitre 10, could only get a full sheet was $67

thanks
i will check if my local mitre 10 carries it.
i would have bought a sheet for the jokerz if i new it was that cheap.
when i was trying to buy a replacement piece for the jokerz the cheapest i could find for was just over $100.
didn't think to try at mitre 10 as most places i rang said it was rare for companies to stock it.
but i think they where wrong.

Last time I checked they didn't carry the 16mm ply.  8 or 10mm was the thickest I think.

Possibly but don't have a bunnings out here, if i couldnt get it locally i would have had to drive over to rockhampton. I was surprised to be honest can't get 18mm mdf anywhere here but they had ply on the shelf.

So my legs and heavy duty leg brackets finally turn up today 2 weeks later and low and behold no frigging leg levellers. (Guess where from, wasn't from mark. Altho i wish i waited and got them from him)

Cabinet is now inside with legs on & black pincab protectors, looks pretty damm sexy if i say so myself but i might be biased ;) . Ground braid all redone and installed heavy duty leg brackets for extra sturdiness. And my nice assortment of parts, decided to get a red start button instead of the yellow to try and keep the colors the same but theres no start printed on it guess i'll have to make a sticker of some sorts.

Can't wait to hear the engine start up and idle through that! Old woofer on the right so you can see the size difference. One side filled and ready to go, other side isn't as bad so won't take long depending on this heat. It's worse than a sauna in the shed right now.

With the bolts, I put them into my cordless drill (thread end in) and spin at full speed with head into a scotch bright pad (with a bit of isocol alcohol)...They come out better than a tumbler.

Tumbler does not always do the job on leg bolts - I've never been that happy with the results. I use the buffing wheel on my bench grinder with the white compound - works a treat !

Awesome looking HS 2 - Looking GREAT  ^^^

Don't know if you guys can see the difference real clearly, but first photo was the playfield after it was cleaned with shellite before polishing and wax (you can see the scratches it had sort of). 2nd photo is after treasure cove kit then waxing, blacks and colours really stand out now. Now onto cleaning all the parts and reassembly.

Looking great.  I have my HS2 the same treatment with the TC kits and it came up a treat.

You've turned a very worn machine back to near new!

Spent the afternoon regraining all the metal rails and installing, finishing off the rest of the posts now. Cliffy hole protector on the tunnel installed + nice new rubber on the bumper at the back of the hole. Installed all new targets last night, old ones were all discolored and completely worn out. Still quite alot of parts cleaning to do, plus i need to clean and flatten all the plastics. With any luck my switches and flipper kit will be here friday if not monday then i can get the playfield back in the cab.

That's purty!

Gonna get one of these?

Were the magnets bad on your machine? I have 1 spare coil in my parts bucket for Getaway, picked it up in an odd lot of parts. I've had 2 and neither ever had a bad magnet.

Yeah got one coming from rtbb my old one was thrashed only 1 screw mount wasn't broken. One magnet didn't work when i did the initial test when i got the machine and to be honest the coils looked sh*t and they were wrapped in masking tape of all things. Figured i'd play it safe and replace them since they were cheap enough to get new ones of anyway.

Flipper assemblies rebuilt & new coils, should be nice and strong for quite some time. Repairing some switches now and should hopefully have the playfield back in the cabinet tomorrow.

Supercharger ramp ready to go. New magnet coils, new opto's, new decal, cleaned harness, cleaned, regrained and polished ramp.

Did you find your supercharger decal in Australia? None of the local guys have them listed, was going to swap mine while it is out.

Marco has them for about $7aud.

Got the playfield in this afternoon, wired it all up. Is working a treat right now except for the mars lamp, will have to get the meter out to see if it's getting power. The pinball pro speaker kit sounds amazing in it. Need to finish cleaning plastics and flattening them, installing leds into the inserts then reassemble everything else.

Great work!

Is the lamp coming on but motor not spinning or nothing at all?

Nothing at all.

*Edit*

No power to it at all from the driver board so hopefully it's just a fuse, i'll check it out tomorrow when theres light.

Alrighty F103 was blown which is for solenoid 25-28 and the mars lamp is 27 so i'll see if i can get a replacement fuse from jaycar today to see if i can have a win.

Sigh now theres only 8v going to the mars lamp and 0v on the other line, but 8v on each line going to the triac board from the driver board. Fun fun fun. Also going to have to look at the sound board, with the speakers connected or disconnected the amp gets way too hot in no time at all. Also the switch on the tunnel wasn't working was a rooted diode, fixed that now the coil on it has stopped working altogether.

Did you rebuild the driver board at all (ie caps+BR's).   What are the voltages like on the TP's on it?
Title: Re: Getaway - High Speed 2 Resoration WIP
Post by: Supremicus on December 02, 2009, 04:36:44 PM
No didn't rebuild it yet because i think theres more problems on the board that a cap and br replacement won't fix eg one of the transistors has a broken leg etc. Trying to diagnose problems at the moment to see if its either a wiring fault or it can be traced back to the driver board then i'll go from there.

I've been there before. I try to make all my games work 100% before I take them apart anymore - but I have several that are torn down with playfields off being restored that were never played before I tore them down.

Ok i've traced the couple of problems back to the driver board so i'll sort out my list of components and get them ordered to fix it up. Have finished assembling most of the playfield so that's done and out of the way, and with any luck once the driver board is repaired everything will be ready to go. 2nd photo is so you can see the led's, I quite like it  &&

Success! The supercharger opto's are all working now, i could watch it spin that ball around all night lol. Left to get working is the eject coil and 3 lights.

Can someone with a getaway tell me what pin number their red/white wire is on the J106 connector, the manual is giving 2 different numbers J106-3 & J106-5. Should be the turn on wire for the triac board which is why mine isn't turning on.

I will take a look in the morning and post back - I have a complete beacon assy from a parted Getaway, and it has the wiring harness. It worked when the getaway was parted, so I know it's right.

Glad someone had a pic.. I checked, and my box o getaway parts has the resistor board, the triac board, the cable that connects them, but not the cable that runs to the driver board :(

WOW - LEDs are quickly becoming very popular, and this looks to be ANOTHER game that are suited to LEDs. I guess it is also a placement decision - Where are they most appropriate.

Nice game - really enjoyed the progress here  ^^^

Thanks fellas. Finally tracked down the broken wire that was stopping the couple of lights working, it broke off the daisy chain at the supercharger sign so that is now fixed and everything is finally working as it should with no errors. Basically all finished now except for the sound board which might be here in the morning since aus post will be open, sent it to Tony to be repaired just incase it was an ic or something i couldn't test. Put the backbox light board in this afternoon with its leds, cleaned the backglass and put it back in. The led kit from cointaker came with 2 nice really high powered led's for the headlights on the backglass, the photo dosn't do it justice. So now a before and after photo and a shot of all the leds on so people can decide if they'd want it for theirs. Thanks to Tony Turner for the great project pin and his help with questions & repairing my sound board, and thanks to all you guys who helped with input over the whole restoration.

I'm "floored" - VERY nice mate  ^^^

That simply does not look like the same machine. The front door panel was always going to be a challenge, but you have done a great job in fixing it.

Amazing restoration - some really impressive work done on this game. The LEDs just "top it off" - especially in the last shot with the flash off.

Congrats !
