Title: Footy Season is almost here
Post by: Cow Corner on February 09, 2012, 04:48:02 PM
It's nearly that time of the year again!!! Regardless of the code the wait is almost over. The cricket season has been a revelation and very enjoyable but footy is where my heart truly lies
So if you are a AFL,Super Rugby, NRL or a combination where do you think your team/s will run this year?
Are you getting a membership or just attending a few games? Is a footy outing a family event or a arvo/eve with the boys?
Best of luck to my teams- Broncos and Reds....I hope the broncs go well without locky but we could be in for a tough year and best of luck to reds in defending their title. I will be juggling two memberships this year for my eldest son and I and I can't wait!! #*#

The only upside to the end of daylight savings is that it means that the AFL season is starting. I've been a Richmond member since 1981 (Junior Cub) right up to today, and although we have been the "big underachiever" in the last 30 years, I still look forward to the season. My Son is in his second year as a full member, and it means a lot to me that he is interested, and we have father / son time on the weekends.

I think we will finish 7th - 10th. But the improvement is there, and as most supporters know, Richmond are the sleeping giant. When we DO play finals, the crowds are always up. Funny thing with Footy - it is the ONLY "activity" that will take me away from pinball time !!

Yep, watch AFL (Crows), follow NRL (Melbourne Storm) and watch the recorded games from 1am or whenever they replay them down here and take a passing interest in Rugby Super 14 or whatever it is these days - take more interest in Rugby Union internationals.

Unless there is some bizzare send off...oh no not again!! or a freak of nature wales will win that game...@$1.16 they are unbackable but if the Irish can upest the French@$3.85 which they are more than capable of doing it makes for an interesting double.

His manager is just talking trash before the season starts. Seriously, what player does not want to play finals football ? Lids will move into a role in the midfield, then the pressure will be on him to perform.

Arh...the terrible Tigers. No doubt Mike Sheahan from the Herald Sun will write his annual double 2 page spread about "this is going to be Richmonds year".....funny thing is, they are the worst performing Melbourne club of late. Expect say 5 wins in 2012 and one of those wins will be against Carlton in the 1st round lol.
Does anyone know the captain's name?? How does a football dept. get this so wrong. Give it to someone that has character, attitude and some flair. Anyway, as for Deledio...he doesn't have much football skill in him - more of an athlete playing in the wrong sport. Take the money and run!

Had to question there for a minute - me thinking that there was a Victoria team amongst this years State of Origin series.
Anyway, the team that houses more Storm players shall win.
Ps - there's no XXXX beer on tap in Melbourne.

It would be nice to have VIC team in origin but I just can't see the vics supporting a team that has no born origin players...they would have to fill it with outsiders.
Walk up start for the QLD team from the storm ranks are Smith, Slater and Cronk...7,9 and 1 are the basis of attack in any league side and these guys are the best in the biz.
Combine that with Thurston and Scott from the cows... Thaiday,Hannant, Civoniceva,YowYe,Parker, Hodges from the Broncos and Inglis and Taylor from the bunnies....look out.
The best back line in ages is the basis for our QLD side combined with a very solid forward pack...even without Locky it will be a very imposing side as usual.
We are going for 7 straight series wins in a row.

Thank god there is no XXXX on tap down there...it's camel piss and footy drink prices are crazy...I take a flask full of bourbon or vodka when I go to the footy and buy softies to add to it. ^^^

I am QLDer through and through.....but
I never write off the Blues...it's origin and anything can happen.
If Nsw pick a team on form they can give it a real shake but they must show some more faith and have some real guts in their selections.
Do the security do pat downs and check ya undies...lol? I like to stash my piss etc on my person.

Footy is back!!!! #*#
Dragons in a golden point win over the Knights and their old coach last night was a great way to start the season for the NRL.
Broncos v Eels tonight should be a cracker too, hope that red hill boys can derail the hayne train early if he plays.
Warriors v Manly in the GF replay on sunday is a mouth watering proposition as well, I don't think any other team tackles with the venom of the warriors.

Scrappy but solid win in the end for the broncs when the chips were down, they can only get better from this, too much dropped ball and silly errors in the first half but the defence was excellent....exciting times ahead for sure.
Wallace and Norman looked very good in the halves, it will be interesting to see how they shape up against JT and the cowboys next week.

The Storm are raging hot favs when they travel to Canberra today to take on the raiders, still I don't mind the raiders at $2.85.
The storms track record in the nations capital is not the best, it should be a top game.

It was a top game of footy in the wet.
The raiders played very well and had it in the bag until Billy the kid had his say...man what a leap.
The raiders were also dudded on a no try rule on a forward pass that clearly was ok in the first half, this left more than a few people scratching their heads.
It is going to be a brilliant season!!

There are lesser Captains than Newman. Maxwell is the worst captain in living memory, and is proof that it is not necessarily the best player in the team who is captain (in collingwood's case it is their worst). Not sure who "captain jack" is, but Cotchin will be captain next season.

Well the best news for us in Melbourne who love our Rugby League is that GEM (90 Digital) has started showing live Rugby League!

So last night I was able to watch Melbourne Storm beat the Newcastle Knights live, and then the Broncos beat the Dragons on delay (recorded). And I watched the last quarter of the AFL in between.

Sure beats having to record and watch the next day.

It's about time league fans in Melbourne get to see the storm live or at a reasonable hour. It will get better after the new tv rights deal is done and hopefully nine will lose the rights as they have done little to keep the fans happy.
The Storm were on fire again last night, the knights tried hard but where never going to trouble them too much but that first half from the Broncos was prob the best half of footy from any side so far this year. They were white hot...a good fightback from the dragons but the damage was already done.
Broncos v Storm is going to be massive when they meet.

I was watching the two Sydney afl sides last week and a thought struck me as Isreal Falou amateurishly crashed a pack for no useful result. I had thought recruiting Carmichael Hunt and falou  was for marketing. Then this more evil thought occured- given how useless they are, could it be n AFL plot to show them up and therefore the other code?

Smoke and mirrors from the war chest.
It's all show and go with hunt and izzy for the afl powerbrokers, they( afl bosses) couldn't give a toss too much how well they play, they have served thier purpose already and both those guys have already been replaced and forgotten in the NRL very quickly.

Maybe a grand final with the Broncos if they can win enough games during State of Origin.

No-one will beat the storm if they stay fit and motivtaed.
I love the broncos and I think we will be there when the whips are cracking but I can't see anyone knocking the storm off atm.
They are a brilliantly coached side and they are very hungry this year.

You might be right on the first, but I suspect the Tigers will chalk up one tonight against Melbourne.

My best mate tells me a story about Mark Neeld. My mate's younger brother was best friends with Neeld when they were kids. They lived in a very elevated house, and he took great pleasure one day keeping Neeld cornered in the front yard, squirting him with the garden hose. It's funny when you hear first hand accounts about people who are now adults and in the media spotlight.

As a Tigers supporter, I'm happy with the two games we have played. Having seen both Carlton and Collingwood play, I think Carlton will win tonight. Their structures are more solid and their smaller players in the forward line won't have much trouble against the taller Pies defense. Funny to see the worst captain in the AFL return for Collingwood against a smaller, faster Carlton forward line.

Tigers will beat Melbourne. Not sure why Melbourne are sliding. Tigers are on the way up.

I played indoor soccer for the Victorian team in the early ninties. I can play soccer, but I don't like the game.
I played Fitzroy U19s as a 16 year old. I also trained with Collingwood, but gave the game away as I dreaded the thought playing for collingwood after my area was rezoned. Also had invitations from Carlton and Essendon. This is as a junior.
I would never play rugby, as the idea of sticking my head up someones butt and then gang tackling cavemen is not a sport. It's a combination of WWE Wrestling and a fart smelling contest.  %.% %.%

Seriously, I think the comparison between the codes is a great topic for discussion. The games I've been to this year attracted 78,000 (Carlton), 60,000 (Collingwood) and 50,000 (Melbourne). The crowd numbers of Rugby League can only DREAM of getting those figures for home and away games. I think 5 games combined would not even reach 78,000. But the real proof is watching the "elite" League players changing codes (Failau and Hunt) to AFL are struggling to adapt to a sport that relies on skill and stamina. If it were not for their marketing value, they would be in a local league.

Melbourne has embraced the Storm, and we are the "sport mad" capital of Australia, but the code can never compete with AFL. No matter what code you prefer, AFL is streets ahead.

I'm sure these two signings were an evil plot by the AFL to show these sniffers had no hope when playing a game of skill.

Aint that the truth! We'd embrace Flies Crawling Up a Wall as a sport given the chance! Storm's success says more about the love of sport in Melbourne than anything else.

Bit worried about the Pies. The media are having a feast day on Malthouse VS McGuire. Carlton are top 4 material on a roll and the pies need their backline back. Pendlebury has been very quiet with his output. Still, never write ANY team off before round 6 - thus is the evenness of the competition. I really felt for Luke Ball going down with his knee. Same feeling as when Lenny Hayes went down last season. Both tough players. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Cats get beat by North. Strange things happen in the first few rounds.

Skill...all codes have skill and if you really believe that afl has more skill, well lets just agree to disagree.
Go and try union or league.....see how much stamina and skill you need...plenty!
Izzy and K are only there for the $$$ mate. They say so themselves( K told me at the junior club where he played and my boy now plays that very fact last year) but they would never tell the press or thier afl mates and bosses that, it defeats the purpose of cash in. I don't blame them for taking the easy option for easy $$...good on them.
There will be no more big names going to the fumble academy, the war chest has done it's bit to set up camp in sydneys west and on the gold coast and they have done it well.
I just can't beleive they treat thier tassie fans like crap and don't give them a team.

Gday mick
Origin will hurt them a bit too along with the storm and the broncs.
If they come through there ok and jt fires them up for the run home they should be thereabouts in the 8 to have a good crack at it.
Broncos lose Teo to the Bunnies, I reckon he will be keen to put in a big one v the warriors on sat.

Origin always hurts the Storm, Broncos and the Cowboys (as far as the Queensland team goes), there not the only ones though, and it makes tipping just that much harder, shame they can't move it to a different time.
Title: Re: Footy Season is almost here
Post by: Cow Corner on May 03, 2012, 11:23:16 AM
Yeah there are other teams that suffer at origin time but nowhere near as much as the 3 mentioned. As long as the QLD side is ready to rock and give it to the Blues again thats all the matters. It does give a chance for some young kids to come through, Griffin has said that the Broncos will be resting the origin guys again this year.
I like origin where it is, I guess I am stuck in the tradition of it and to have it moved just wouldn't feel the same to me.
My dad took me to the first origin and I have been going ever since, although these days getting origin tickets to a game in brisbane can be like winning the lottery.

Cowboys were on fire last night...JT and Mango made the dragons look 2nd rate on the back of some brutal forward running and tackling...the cows line speed in defence was inspirational! The deliberate elbow to the jaw of JT was a dead set low act!
Eels/Dogs game was a non event and the dogs made the eels pay for some very ordinary compressed defence.

You have correctly tipped both our wins ! Keep up the good work  *%*

Two from Six is very good considering we narrowly lost the the Premiers (away), and narrowly lost to WCE (tipped as a premiership threat). We have Sydney at home this week (another top 6 team we will have played), and we have a goodes record at the G against the Swannies. Speaking of Goodes, he won't be playing. Tigers will chalk up wins against bottom sides and teams around our level. Due to the compromised draw (North Melbourne play GWS + GCS Twice which is 16 "bonus points" before the season began, we will miss out this year, but we will play finals next year for sure.

Gallen escapes from the judiciary unscathed, I reckon if he was a QLD player they would have punted him for 2 weeks so he missed origin 1.
It won't matter though, the storm will turn the sharks in sushi this weekend and the canetoads will feast on the cockroaches again in the origin series!
Bring it on!

Brisbane to upset the Pies.
Another loss coming up for the Tigers (sorry Nino), but 14th on the ladder isn't too bad lol.
Might go and watch Essendon defeat West Coast @ Ethihad Stadium. Being a Richmond supporter, i might have to pull out the number 12 guernsey and apply some of those red fluorescent stickers over the yellow sash. Who's number 12 for the Dons?

Arh the bears.....Roger Merrett will be interviewed by his successor Leigh Matthews, which will spark current coach Michael Voss, to lead the team for their 3rd win for the year.
Voss v Buckley......which out of these two players was better?
V for me.

Stevo's tips for this weekends AFL games:

Brisbane to upset the Pies.
Another loss coming up for the Tigers (sorry Nino), but 14th on the ladder isn't too bad lol.

As much as I hate the pies I think they will romp it in.
Voss was a great player but he is a pretty ordinary coach.
I think he got into coaching way too quickly after playing.
Go Broncos!

The improvement is encouraging, and I tipped a 4 goal win. Should have been much more and we missed some very easy shots.

I've had the flu all week - but I still went to the game. It is good to see the progress Damien Hardwick has made to our club. Essendon have had a fantastic start to the season, and the Dreamtime matches are always close. I'm looking forward to the match.

You and me both Nino would love to see the Tigers win, but they would have to play their best football tomorrow AND Essendon to faulter & make costly mistakes at the same time.

Sick of watching them in the past, trying to scrap a win.
Kick goals and kick plenty - none of this 10 point win margin. I want to hear/see them win by 10 goals.

Proud of the Tigers this evening. If we kicked straight, we would have won by 3-4 goals. They had a couple of extra players (umpiring to 3/4 time was atrocious), but if Essendon are the benchmark this year, we will be playing in the Grand Final.

Still think this year will be the most even for decades. Final eight is very open.

I thought Melbourne played well, they did squander a few chances with thier last tackle attacking options that would have been different with the big 3 there but the game could have gone either way in the last 10 mins.
Melbourne will still be there when the whips are cracking come finals time.

Pity the ref missed the blatant fowrad pass that lead to the first gold coast try.
Too much dropped ball and poor defence sealed the broncos fate though.

They should relocate to adelaide or perth for expansion or just do everyone a favour and leave the comp, they are pretenders that will win nothing more than the wooden spoon.
Todd Carney is a myth and the sharks are a joke, couldn't happen to a more deserving side.

I think the Tigers will make up for the loss earlier this year. Essendon at full strength were helped along with some questionable umpiring decisions. The remaining games are the footprint for next year.

I'm hoping the Pies have the stamina to win against Sydney on Friday night - should be a good game.
As for Hawthorn v Adelaide...does anyone remember the Elimination final game between these two sides @ Telstra Dome in 2007?
Epic last quarter, where the lead had changed several times.
Don't see this happening on Saturday night though.

Hawks v Swans Grand Final.

I tipped a Hawks VS Swans Grand Final. But don't discount Collingwood at ANZ Stadium. Their record is excellent on the road and especially against Sydney.

Hawks will beat either Collingwood or Sydney in the GF. They are simply "too good".

So the Pies were flat last Friday night. Pendlebury had a shocker and never plays well clean shaven.
As for the Hawks, that was close game against the Crows.

Congrats to Jobe Watson on winning the Brownlow Medal. Doesn't he look like the guy in that Toyota Hilux commercial:
.

Hanging for the Brownlow email spreasheet - is it out yet?

Cloke @ Carlton?...doesn't look like it. Surely, they would have announced it by now - he'll stay.
But if he does go to another club, could Collingwood pick up Fevola, that's if he puts his hand up in the coming draft?

Anyone going this Saturday?
