Please find attached some progress of the Gottlieb Picnic from 1958.
This is a fairly rare 2 player woodrail that is actually pretty cool to play. Also a very pretty game
Have owned the game for 5 years and have rebuilt the mechanics and the playfield has been redone with new playfield plastics, pop bumper caps, skirts, bodies and flippers etc.
All that is need is the cab to be reprayed and the legs.
These are the game Saturday morning and after all the mechanical parts were taken off the cab
-
What a pain - had been repainted not once but TWICE!
The cab had a Drop a Card design on the outside, after stripping that layer off under it was ANOTHER repaint but with a Sweethearts cab design. So being careful as I wanted to be able to get to the original cab design to make stencils for the respray.
The original paint was just there as it had been sanded back. Anyways there was enough for what I needed, same with the head
-
oh very excited about this one tony $#$
-
These are the results of making new stencils today, there was enough of the original paint to trace and I have high resolution photos from another collector in the US that I will be able to print out at work (helps working in a drawing office with plotters worth 50K &&
So will sand the rest back next weekend. Will be able to remake the original design with the use of a combimation of stencils and masking tape.
Will be a few weeks work but will be ready for the meet in October.
Next will be Gaucho from 1963
-
Look forward to seeing the finished cab ^^^
-
Oh this repaint is doing my head in....very tricky design.
Taking my time, don't feel like I'm getting anywhere at the moment ^.^
Will keep chipping away everyday and with some luck will get the first colour (green) on this Saturday morning
-
You will get there mate hopefully seeing yours done ill get into mine ^^^
-
Yeah, good to get out there and get the music pumping (Sex Pistols reunion on DVD tonight *%*)
Suppose the front door and all the hardware off the front of the game and the legs have also been redone
-
Keep up the good work.Every woodrail restored makes the world a happier place. All the best, Mark.
-
Will take time, patience but will come up smick Tony.
-
Looking good Tony - Keep going with the updates.
What shade of white did you use for the basecoat ?
-
Definitely looks like a good challenge Tony.
Looking forward to more progress pics . Keep up the great work!

Is it perfectly matched to the "whites" of this era ?
-
Well that is real tough because all these games are 50+ years old and also alot of the Gottlieb cabs from this era have totally different base colours other than shades of white....such as yellow and blue *%*
I went up to the paint shop and took samples of all the shades of white and matched it that way. It has a slight cream colour to it. Really like the look of it. Was also applied with a roller....will never spray again. Firstly I feel there are less chemicals and it sure is less messy.
Very happy with the roller, sure not for everybody but very happy with the texture it also has.
Tell you what - these stencils are a bastard!
-
I really appreciate your tip re colour matching Tony .. so simple , which is probably why it never occurred to me . Will definitely do the same when I repaint the cab on Lady Luck very soon.

Dave,
There must be at least 20 shades of each of the 'major' colours used on pinball machines, not just cab paint but also playfields and backglasses.
Once I did the match took the samples back up to the paint shop and they mixed them on the spot - was interesting to watch the different amounts of colours that went into making each.

Well after 8 WEEKS and a just a few cool beers she is finsihed.
Was only over the last 2 days that I felt like I was finally getting some place - after looking at the original pix on this post I'm sitting here just buzzing.
She came up soooooooooooo good - I'm stoked ^^^
Will post some pix tomorrow sometime - all that is needed now to complete are some front door hardware from PBR that should arrive soon. Everything that could be bought for this beautiful old girl was.
Here is to hoping that it inspires just one member to want to find and totally restore a game of this vintage - they rock *%*
-
Forgot - special thanks to Kev for the advice on painting - much appreciated mate ^^^
-
So around 80 - 90 hours have been put into this beautiful old girl. I felt like it was finally coming together about 4 days ago.
This rebuild/restore seemed to take forever.
This shot is the game about to get moved back into the lineup.
Kinda cheated on the design - it's about 90% of the original design that came out of the factory in 1958 but slightly simplified the side art.
To say I'm stoked, well that is an understatement ()

That is one superb accomplishment. Fantastic work mate - well done. The paint job looks fantastic.
Can we have MORE PICTURES !
-
Sure can...here is the backglass and the playfield.
The backglass is a little faded but one of the best Picnic glasses I have seen, not that there are many kicking about.
The playfield was fully stripped top and bottom and rebuilt from scratch. All new bumper bodies, skirts, daisy caps, flippers and mechs, even a N.O.S. set of score and instruction cards was located!
The "1" playfield insert just infront of the roto targets was missing and even found a dude in the US that was parting out a playfield.
Had a one off set of playfield plastics made for her &&
-
Worth all the hard work Tony that looks superb and yes more pictures plese ^^^
-
You happy with the cab re-paint Tony? I think it looks bloody good ()
-
Front just waiting for some hardware to arrive from PBR - waiting for door surround, new front door lock and Trapezoid coin entrance plate (top right)
-
Close up of side of game (fave shot)

Yeah I am *kinda* - as anybody that puts so much time into their restoration they would like it better.
It was ALL done with a roller (different sizes) and the texture is real cool...you will see in 13 days *%*
I'm keen for another repaint - and will do Gottlieb's Foto Finish from 1961 next....have a reproduction glass and Shay plastics arriving this coming week #*#
One more shot of the front of the entire game.....also tracked down reproduction metal flipper surrounds that PBR no longer sells #@#
