The Aussie Pinball Arcade

The idea for Homepin came from an initial thought to build a custom, one-off pinball machine as a bonding exercise between my son and I about eight years ago. The concept was thrown around between us but nothing really eventuated – not as a pinball machine anyway.
As I investigated further I saw a need for certain replacement boards and so started making these. I now have a wide range of pinball replacement boards that is expanding all the time.
My importing business in China was also expanding and my son decided to move to China to help but he eventually started his own graphic design business in Guangzhou. His business now has a staff of over 30 and he has some very large contracts with European companies designing their packaging and manuals. He also writes, illustrates and prints text books for Chinese kindergartens. Grant is a very accomplished freehand artist. I will post some of his artwork done over previous years in this post (the reasons for posting his drawings will become obvious later in this story).
Over this past year I have seen probably the most activity in pinball since I was first involved in the industry back in 1979. The resurgence of interest has been spurred on by better titles and other players such as JJP entering the market. I have also seen first hand at places like Pinfest just how much general interest pinball is again generating and this encourages me.
I felt that I had more to offer and looked at my credentials. I am a trade qualified electronics engineer of over 30 years. I am by nature, an inventor, winning the Peoples Choice award on ABCs The New Inventors (in fact I put my occupation as "Inventor" on the immigration departure form when I leave the country). I have extensive “hands on” experience in the amusement industry. I have eight years experience in China having my own office and staff and several different small facilities over the years. This is a HUGE learning curve all on its own as anyone who has had anything to do with China would agree I'm sure.
I started thinking about the manufacture of a machine and what it would take to achieve. I have the knowledge & skills and also the contacts and connections needed to establish a full production line in China. I believe (right or wrongly I guess) that I can do things better than “the others” - there are certain things I believe do NOT belong in a pinball machine and other things that are so poorly made I just shake my head when I see them, both mechanically and electronically. Those who have seen and used my Homepin products will already know that I only accept the best.
The only missing piece was a suitable theme.............I studied many forums, taking on board the comments made by people and also had a few brainstorming sessions with some close friends both in the pinball community and from outside it. I decided on a theme I consider will appeal to a very large range of people from all age groups and I set about finding out how to acquire the licence. This is no mean feat I can assure you but it seems after six months of negotiations I am almost ready to part with a very large chunk of cash and sign on the dotted line.
Just this week all of the separate pieces of this very complex puzzle have fallen into place.
I won't reveal exactly what that theme is until I have the signed agreement in my hands but I have to say I'm pretty excited. Now to set up a factory – this will cost plenty. I have tipped in quite a substantial amount to get the ball rolling (pun intended). Where the balance will come from, we will have to see? I have no idea at this stage but I'm sure it will happen.
One point I must clarify here is that I would like nothing more than to set up a manufacturing facility and make the machines in Australia. When I crunched the numbers with rent, labour and the “over the top” expense of doing business in Australia I calculated that a machine would have to sell for around $12K and that killed off that idea. Manufacturing in Australia is DEAD – full stop!
The very first thing that I will offer is going to be the worlds first, full size, commercial pinball machine KIT because I really believe in this project as a perfect Father/Son bonding exercise and I hope it will be supported by the pinball community.
All of this will mean I probably won't have the time to annoy so many of you in the near future on the forums (thank God I hear some sighing) and I invite members to visit my Shenzhen factory when I have it up and running (by arrangement naturally).
Watch this space for an announcement on the theme VERY soon..................

Sight unseen, theme unkown
And I would still trust you to deliver the goods Mike
Where do we sign up?

If the theme is good and your sample machine plays well and has a good set of rules I will be in for a father & son/daughter build experience
good on you,
I have a few theme ideas as well
-
Awesome news mate, all the best for your new venture *%*
-
Awesome here comes my first bnib pinball machine well done homepin
-
Awesome news and excited for the unveiling of this new machine. Also interested in seeing the cost of a pinball machine coming out of China.
Cheers!
Adam.
-
Wow, very cool. I look forward to seeing what the theme is.
-
Exciting times ahead, looking forward to the title release. Go Mike.
-
Sounds exciting and no doubt will be successful. I like the concept of a kit as I think it would be a real blast to actually assemble the game (and those fussy guys can really finesse in the finer details) and tweak it to perfection and then play it. Man how cool to be able to say I built this myself.....well kind of.
I'm guessing the electronics will be assembled in the kit. If not I think this would be too daunting to most of us and probably give your support crew too many head aches.
Good luck with the project mate
And can't what for the title.......wow Metallica II or avengers II...... just messing with ya, I'm sure it will be something awesome and original
-
I understand this must be a massive, daunting task of developing, testing and promoting the final product but have to ask
curious about you goal year for release 2014, 2015 ??? - enjoy the ride

Mid to late 2015 to coincide with an aniversary (can't say more than that just yet)

That sounds very exciting, good luck with the venture I hope you pull it off.

OK what machines were built in '75, '85 or '95?
All the very best with the project. I hope you succeed where other Aussies have failed.
The kit idea sounds interesting. Just a thought but perhaps you might consider different levels of kit e.g. beginner and experienced. It would be a shame for your machine to cop a bad wrap just because a Noobie couldn't put the machine together properly and either damaged your reputation or the machine.
Again though Mike, all the very best with it.

Intention with the kit is flatpack cabinet, all electronics assembled and tested including wiring harness - all mechanical assemblies built and tested.
Basically assemble the cabinet, screw in the boards and assemble the parts to the playfield.
All of this could change as things progress however.
-
This is really exciting, and from a technical standpoint, there is not better qualified person to succeed in such and undertaking than yourself.
The most important part of your idea is the "father / son bonding". I can speak from experience that this will be the BEST aspect of the project. Your son might not know it now, but he will be grateful for everything he learns from you (I know my father did the same), and I spend as much time with my son teaching him about pinball. For a 9 year old, he knows a lot about games - as in the names etc.. No matter what the outcome, the journey will be the most rewarding.
I'm keen to follow the progress, and who knows, the first "Homepin" might be my first NIB for many years.
Good on you Mike, the interest in pinball is increasing and it might be time to ride the wave !
-
Wow Mike this is unbelievable news an Aussie building Pinballs in quantity Wow
Can't wait for updates on this one.
Best of luck mate
-
Mike, your idea has crossed my mind several times (fantasised) over the past couple of years. You and your son have proven that you can take the first steps to reality by your Chinese ventures. I congratulate you both on your drive and enthusiasm.
I would certainly buy your flat pack with several criteria in mind.
Keep it simple.
Stick to proven themes and playfield designs. Maybe some research with pinball enthusiasts for ideas.
Artwork and style execution need to be spot on.
Component quality is a must.
The price point has to be enticing.
If you go ahead, you would be one of the first with such a concept and with current economic climate, onto a winner.

Some have asked me when I will announce the theme - here are a few more details:
***************
I will announce the theme as soon as the contract is signed. I received this email this morning so I am guessing sometime next week (fingers crossed):
Hi Mike
Fabulous news! Thanks for confirming. I can confirm that all of your additional points are fine to be included in the deal.
I have looped (name) in, who will raise the documents and send across for your approval soonest.
Regards
For info: one of the points that I insisted on was the ability to supply LICENCED spare parts for the life of the machine even though my agreement has an expiry date. They have agreed to this... *%*
This prevents the idiotic situation we see today where you can't (easily and legally) get some parts for Addams Family, Dr, Who and many others.
I am confident that this theme will make a few other "pinball manufacturers" sit up and take notice - I believe it is BRILLIANT!! (even if I do say so myself %.%)
-
Wow, very exciting news.
Great concept and couldn't agree more with the sentiment shared by everyone so far. Well done on a forward thinking idea...very promising for pinball and collectors. I'll be watching this space with interest.
-
Hey mike got a fantastic idea. Produce a shitty magazine type pinball book which comes with one piece of a pinball. As you collect all the editions you make yourself a pinball. Just think after spending $3.2M you end up with a pinney %.% or like in most cases you end up missing a mag or two and end up with a pile of crap ^&^
Seriously i think your concept is great and will work with enthusiasts in the very least.
-
Mike and I have discussed his theme - and while I can't say anything until things are formalised, can I say that it is perhaps one of the best licensed themes I could think of, ready set for pinball - can't wait for this to be announced!
-
This sounds great, can't wait to see what the theme is ^^^ ^^^
-
Any thoughts on making your own mods Mike? I would imagine there would be huge potential in this area.
-
Wow, watch this space, can't wait!
A wild guess, "The Voice"
Art and graphics would be nice with reds, blacks, blues and deep shades.
3 toys around upper playfields as the judges with their backs to the player.
Player sings better by achieving objectives and one to three judges turns around. Player hits the judge of choice and sets himself up for next ball. Grand Champion becomes the Voice.
Whatever the theme, I will be waiting with anticipation.
-
licensed......
now to work out: movie, band, tv show, car theme (ford, holden), suitable for the world scene.....
very exciting Mike

Great news Mike, good luck with this mighty adventure...
The idea of a kitset pinball is fantastic ^^^

Mike are you able to give us an indication of what board set you will either be using? Will it be entirely your own design or an adaptation of an existing board set? Same with the assemblies - Stern, Bally/Wms designs or your own?
The perpetual licence is going to be a game changer for sure. When you think of it, something so simple really and I wonder why it hasn't been negotiated before.
Keep the info coming......please.

Remember that ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I say is subject to change at any time with no notice........
BUT....
You heard it here FIRST!!!
Flipper assemblies will be dual coil (much like WMS with a heavy coil for power and a light coil for hold) BUT the frame will be machined aluminium with roller bearings for the flipper shaft
-
who will be doing the programing?
Yourself, and industry veteran or somebody new to pinball ?
-
sounding great mike, love the idea of roller bearing ^^^
lookin forward to hearing more in the next few weeks, some many thoughts

A VERY well known industry veteran is in negotiation with me now for playfield design - programming details and system are not finalised yet but it WILL be an embedded system like every single (reliable) pinball made.

very exciting
good chance to use those dmd's of yours ^^^

WELL DONE Mike!
Your boards have been excellent.
Also your services to the pinball has be outstanding
Would like to see two version of the pinball kits
1.........pinball kit with complete ready boards and playfield/backglass and hardware and complete cabinet/backbox
2.........pinball kit in a complete kit form, playfield/backglass ,electronic boards kits (assembly your own boards,) make your own cabinet/backbox ( owner supplied material}
I preferred option 2 . This will be more fun , making your own cabinet and backbox ........... Bring it on Mike and what does member thinks of the 2 options
-
Licensed theme...
Input from industry veteran....
We know that Mike has had talks with Mr Hankin and is reproducing Hankin boards
It must be 'Shane Warne, the pinball machine'!!

I don't like the idea of putting driver, cpu pcbs etc from bare bone. I don't think there are many of us that good at soldering. If you're talking mounting them on a backboard then that's ok. I think as buyer you need to feel confident that at least the electronics are ok, then if there are problems in powering up for the first time you know more than likely its mechanical or a wiring issue.

not keen on assembling electronic boards together but assembling a pin would be cool and bonding with your child
also would like to see a car theme, definitely not a shane game for me and doubt it would do well in the US as well
I am wondering if it is a SS style flat playfield or split level playfield, or dmd with ramps
-
I'm not keen on assembling anything.
I wouldn't have thought this would have been licenced given Mikes love of original themes. The reveal will be interesting for sure.

Mike, some observations about the Woz journey
The payment plan was a good idea, spacing the payments over a year made Woz more accessible.
The wait. JJP customers were content up to the 18 moth mark, then they started to get agitated.
By the time 2 years arrived, many had lost their confidence in Jack. Many people were posting blunt messages about the progress of the game. This was not helped by Jack announcing his next game and expecting people to start paying for game #2 before Woz had shipped
About kit games;
As a non expert, I am happy to screw, bolt, glue, plug and clamp.
What I do not want to do is drill holes.
And thinking about it now, I am not sure I want to install mains voltage electrical stuff
I am surprised that there is that much savings to be had by offering a kit game
Just my 20c
-
I agree with the WOZ comments and I have a very important target date to meet and that cannot be past 2015 - reasons will become obvious shortly.
I will ask for deposits on game one and a substantial discount will apply if paid before a certain date (same as WOZ).
I WILL NOT be asking for deposits for game two BEFORE game one is coming off the assembly line - I may well announce game two, but I won't take deposits for it before people have received game one.
Any kit would have the electronics fully assembled and tested including wiring harness and all mechanical assemblies built.
All holes would be factory drilled/machined and assembly would be nothing more than a screwdriver/spanners and probably some minor soldering.
My concept for the mains is ALL mains will be inside a metal box. It will be factory assembled and tested - much like a computer power supply but purpose built. Sockets or cables will come from this box with the lower secondary voltages. There would be NO reason for anybody to play inside this box except perhaps to change the line voltage or fault find after a power surge/lighting strike etc. Homepin pinball will be the safest pinball made in the world to date (this line is actually used in my advertising blurb to be posted here soon *%*).
A kit will very likely cost me as much, or even a little more, to supply BUT having a kit available is a key part of Homepin heritage. The assembly manual is likely to take a very long time to get together.
All points are subject to change of course but what I have written above is pretty well how I see things working.

I think your my hero being brave enough to take on this challenge, I will purchase your machine just to support you in this venture if my finances allow. $%$

Ok I reckon it's my turn to make an educated guess as to the nature of this new table. After reading that it may be retro influenced put with a chat with Hanken and thinking about what Hanken tables were out. I did a little search and came up with this Quote. In October 2012, The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and announced that it would produce three new films, with the first film, Star Wars Episode VII, planned for release in 2015. This would make such a pin most desirable to release at the same time as the Film. 2015.

I agree, Dr Who, that would be cool for new and old fans.

I also thought it maybe Dr Who ... That would be cool but the aniversary falls in 2013.
Matt Smith has also just anounced he's quitting his role as the current (11th) Doctor.
The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special has already been filmed and will be screened later this year.

Its also a milestone for my wife age wise. Maybe its themed on her. That'd be cool, having a game bitching and nagging at you throughout the game. A bit like funhouse. You could have the pick up your clothes multiball, and who left the toilet seat up hurry up mode. Guaranteed NIB for me &^&

As it is a build it yourself, flat pack pinball, I really believe the title will be LEGO.
Also they are constantly having anniversaries for something and LEGO has a GLOBAL appeal?
My money is on LEGO for sure. Chinese go nuts for it too.

Let me make a clarification here.
The run I am budgeting for is 1750 fully assembled, finished units + 250 kits = 2000 total
MOST - almost ALL - will be finished, fully assembled machines
At this stage there will be NO L.E.'s or "special" models - they will ALL be identical including the kits.
I do intend to have available add-on extras such as shaker motor, topper and other extras.
As for Lego - not a bad guess but maybe it should be "KLEGO" or "REGGO" (said with a Chinese/English twang)
-
Truly awesome Mike, really looking forward to this.
LEGO would be a very cool theme i reckon.
Another older theme that i reckon could have great potential is Inspector Gadget, lots of toys.
A James Bond/murder mystery theme done well with good rules and music would do well in my opinion as well.
Is stereo sound going to be standard? I reckon having little improvements like that would make a Homepin machine stand out from others.
And a completely non negotiable is a REAL KNOCKER, not this poxy speaker fart that Stern uses (unsure about JJP)
Ohh, and for a few of us who enjoy tinkering a lot more than others, i would love a real DIY kit- ie: Bare PCBs and do all the soldering etc myself....happy to test.
-
Damn Mike...YOU'RE OUTTA CONTROL!!
My guess on the theme..... Either Monty Python or The Goodies!
-
What about this for a movie theme

How much will one of these game kits cost to buy from you?
How long is a piece of string?

-
any news Mike......
itching to hear more
also do you think you will be selling a pinball board kit for the guys wanting to do a custom pin that instead of a proc they can purchase your kit and program there own rules whether it be a re-theme or a full custom pin
-
Papers not signed yet - these things take a lot of time according to lawyers...
Custom pin for re-theme is VERY unlikely - there is a lot more to it than may first appear.

A few snippets from the sales blurb:
Modern LED playfield lights and the use of Homepin patented “Edge Light Metamaterial Illumination” backlit translite will wow all players, new and seasoned.

Prepare to be amazed by our machined aluminium flipper assemblies using roller bearings – not only an industry first but these assemblies will enhance game play as well as reduce maintenance to a minimum. Teamed up with our high power, dual coil flipper actuators (theme here) Pinball has the most powerful, reliable and responsive flippers of any pinball machine in the Galaxy.
&
Opto-isolated inputs and outputs guarantee your game electronics will not be damaged in the event of a coil failure or a switch touching coil voltages.

Sales hype - %.%
-
curious if you have made a concept as yet or is it all on paper / computer?
At least one good thing with Stern, JJP, Spooky, Ben Heck, JPop, SkitBPinball all creating pins you can observe and determine a good way to advertise and set public goals and your own goals - sort of not what to do lessons so to speak
-
Great news - no, I still can't announce the theme BUT both parties now agree 100% to all terms and conditions so we are going to contract. As it is international this will still take a little time but it is now a firm go ahead!
-
Woot!
-
Can see that being international it may take some time to go, but this update is awesome.. go lock it in Mike and well done mate ^^^ ^^^

what about a comedy horror show theme pin with the show launched in 1975 would be 40 years old in September 2015
could be a very cool theme that would appeal to many, lots of choice with the art

2000 is too new, does that mean that you would be considered a dinosaur if you knew the original movie release?
Who said anything about a movie.... !@#
I was thinking down another avenue.

Im going to say Alien/Prometheus pin. Or at least i hope so..... %$%

I do like the idea of Rocky Horror and I may well persue that for a future machine.

I second that. Great theme + music and people would be throwing money at you for that title.
Just finished watching Goonies again for the one millionth time. I reckon that would be awesome as a pinball machine. Not sure if people would get sick of Cyndi Lauper's Goonies R Good Enuff on loop though?
As for a theme I've never mentioned anywhere, but I'd be throwing money at whoever made it as a pinball machine (but will probably never see the light of day): Venture Bros.
Cheers!
Adam.
P.s. the suspense for this title is killing me.

I think you'd be on a big winner with that theme.
Very popular.
So you are looking at another game if the first one is a success?
-
Once the factory is set up I aim to manufacture other new titles as long as people are interested in buying them.....

"Hi Mike,
Thanks for your email.
The contract is with our business affairs team at the moment, there has been a minor delay as the lady who organises our contract is on holiday but she is back in the office on Monday and I will explain the need to have this contract turned around asap."
I am as frustrated with this as you all are waiting to find out................................

Translates to "stall for time".
Holidays should not disrupt business dealings no matter how big or small the company.
