I now think that until you have owned a machine, and got it playing perfectly you can not properly rate it. I would agree about TZ and IJ, but I have had less than 10 games on each, and to be honest I am just not drawn to them for another bash. Where's Wotto........(hey mate I didnt list WH20 in this thread) :lol I am starting to like it more.
-
I am not going to be popular for saying this, but the most overated games are anything with a bally/williams sticker on it,with an asking price of $5500 or more. :D
* I SHLD SAY THE PRICES ARE OVER-RATED, NOT THE GAME ITSELF.
Sure bally/williams have a deep rule set, and some machines like monster bash have the best looking colours/cabinet etc known to man, but the prices now have got to the ridiculous stage.
When looked at in context, who would rather have one pin only or 4 other great titles.
example,
1 x monster bash or !@#
1 x last action hero
with 1 x fishtales
with 1 x freddy krueger
with 1 x frankenstein. (these x 4 titles/EXAMPLES can be picked up for around the $2 grand mark in great nick) !@#
*thats why i have 20 plus pins which are absolutely fun, fun, fun, instead of 3 x totally over-priced bally/williams.
BUT, i want it known, BALLY/WILLIAMS are superb pinballs, no -one can dispute that, JUST OVER-PRICED. !@#
**ohhh, AND IF someone has 3 x bally/williams high end pins, instead of the 20 others 4 example, there is nothing wrong at all there, it JUST GETS DOWN TO PERSONAL CHOICE.... ^^^...NOW, WHO STARTED THIS BLOODY THREAD, WE ARE ALL GOING TO GET IN A ARGUMENT NOW.LOL.LOL. :lol

The only machine I've even walked away from mid game was ST TNG. I have made many attempts to "give it a go", but I just dislike the machine. It has to be a "trekkie" thing as the game is just boring. Very hard to keep it working properly with its crap ruleset.
IJ gets a special mention - An absolute borefest !
Both ST TNG and IJ are severely overrated. !^!
I USED to thing Gunners was as well - But I've really "warmed" to it lately. Good machine.
I don't "Hate" any particular machine, but ST TNG and IJ are the most overrated machines..
-
I guess I could be called a Trekie, 2 of my kids were named with STTNG inmind %.%
But even I dont get the game, and everytime I force myself to play it I am just disapointed. Give me the Bally machine anyday though. I also want to play the Data East machine, but am yet to get to a meet with one.
-
To date the only game I bought and restored enthusiastically, then sold even more enthusiastically, was TZ. Not saying it is a bad game - it's not - but it sure did not do it for me.

That's an interesting one as a few people have said that in the past - then you get those who think it the best game ever. I guess it is one of those games that tend to polarise people.

TZ = (((

Well bugger me, Extra Ball didn't list WH2O. $#$
For me, a very overrated game is The Getaway II - High Speed. I have owned one and sold one. Take the Supercharger out of this game and there isn't much else to do. Then you can only watch the ball whiz around the Supercharger so many times before it gets very boring. The only reason I regret selling it is that I sold it too cheap.

Really? I see to remember playing it a few times back in it's day and really enjoying it. Could be over-rated price-wise, but I thought there was enough to do to hold the interest.
Ah well, each to his own...
-
Having owned these machines, I can safely say that T2 and TZ sent me to sleep. I have more fun playing Flash. As already said, honourable mention to Getaway HS2. Unfortunately some machines have a big reputation to live up to and seem to fall way short when you play them. I think the only thing going for them is the Bally/Williams name. My 2 cents...

Cirquis Voltaire..... LOTR..... !@# %%$ :spam: #(& :wtf:

and FISHTALES (sorry extraball).
No mate your entitled to your opinion. I put FT in the under-priced/under-rated basket, for me its the complete game. I rate it well-over the rest you mentioned: TZ,TAF,Getaway II,circus voltaire,LOTR,simpsons pinball party.
Just boils down to what you enjoy playing. If someone offered me 1 FT or 2 of any (TZ,TAF,Getaway II,circus voltaire,LOTR,simpsons pinball party), and with the previso I could never be allowed to sell them..........I would take the FT.

IJ for me - and the sound drives me to tears
-
STTNG ,
Worst game ive ever owned, followed very closely by Indy,Ive had 2 Indys and sold em quick.
Thought the same with the CV,but the more i played it the more i liked it #*#,i,d say better game than either my MM or MB.
Just personal preference and appealment i suppose
-
Ten points for guys here willing to call STTNG, CV, Addams, TZ etc over-rated. Ten points also for guys who love these titles to not take offense. Just dont bash FT :lol

Was talking about this topic recently and totally agree with your comment.Yes it is a personal choice as to what some people will pay for a certain machine if its something they really want. For me i would rather have more good machines for your money ,which is also more variety than one.
-
I find it humerous that the most overated game mentioned is the Twilight Zone, and it also heads up as the most popular pinball on our owners list.....
I think that it is definatley a love or hate relationship for this machine
Cheers Angelo
-
Big calls here, but understandable I guess. I'd really like to know why Fish Tales is under rated and a good game. I have to admit not playing it much and I have compared it to SWEP1 in "money shots". So maybe I've missed something in the game (no idea on rule set BTW)
-
Just an observation....only Wms/Bally machines mentioned so far.
Wms are my favourite machine, although the two Capcom machines I have briefly played were very nice, so I am not trying to bag them, but as already mentioned., some titles are very over priced.
Great bang for your buck machine - Sega's Frankenstein. Like I say to everyone, if it had a Williams badge on it, it would have an asking price twice as much as it does now.
-
Just an observation....only Wms/Bally machines mentioned so far.
We want bang for buck. WMS/BALLY get the most bucks, so we expect the most bang in them.
-
Couple more Bally Bashings -
MM - terrific game, but not twice (or three times) some other machines, so given that is is twice of three times the price of so many other great games, makes it over-rated to me.
CV - ugly colours, annoying theme, can't enjoy this game at all, and can't understand the love it gets. Maybe it grows on you??
-

That's right but it seems it is these machines that are the biggest or most common let downs. This being the case how or why did machines such as TZ (just cause it seems to get a few mentions in this topic) get such a BIG reputation and demand such a high price?
-
I'd really like to know why Fish Tales is under rated and a good game. (no idea on rule set BTW)
Equally best light show of any pin, great sound, great display features/animations, awesome topper, very colorful/fun artwork, the complete game that can entertain all level of players. Non stop gameplay, its continuous action that brings you back for more and more. It doesnt pretend to be complex or deep, its simple, and its got less junk on it to break-down. Simply it does what it does extremely well. 13640 units sold, and no BS expensive license to prop it up. 7.9/10 on the IPDB........lucky FT owners got what should be a top 10 machine at a bargain price. Rank 104 on the IPDB :D Collectors with dollar sign agendas do no service to the truth in rankings.

U know, after reading alot of these threads, I have come to realise that the really pretty machines like Monsterbash and Circus Voltaire command big bucks...and i thought about it for a while...it reminds me of when i was a young bloke and went to the red light district with a few hundred in hand....
I walked in, saw 5 or 6 really pretty girls, and ofcourse picked the real pretty one...she was a dud....if u know what i mean. && && &&
..so nextime (now give me a break, i was only young once)..so nextime i went back, i picked one who looked 7 outta ten, not the prettiest but still cute....well, lets say that if i had a great car, and i needed it polished, && i would call her...anyway, all this talk reminded me of how we pay big money for pretty things, and not much for the more workable, but less attractive stuff....
(if this thread offends anyone, pretend ya never read it). ^^^ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

Great read so far !
I guess most opinions are focusing on Bally/Williams because they are the most popular machines. DE and Stern Games are not as common, and most DEs are not overpriced (except Guns'N'Roses).
I have played and worked on many DEs, and they don't have the wraps that Bally/williams have. No DEs are "overrated" in my book as there are not too many that are "Highly rated" in the same bracket as TZ, MB etc..
The "High End" Bally/Williams are great games in their own right, but the pricetag can cause then to be "overrated" - No "bang for Buck".
Cactus Canyon, Monster Bash and Medievel Madness are "high End" games that I just walk past on my way to look for an SS or CV. You could almost own and SS and CV for the same price as an MM. MM is nowhere near as good as either !
Fishtales can't be overrated - it is a cheaper family oriented game that is loads of fun and VERY reliable.
-
I've probally only ever played FT twice in my life as its never grabbed me with the layout but over the last few weeks I'm thinking of giving it a chance and are starting to warm to the machine-Overtimes killing me at the moment and I'm only doing it for ONE reason???? new pinball and I was thinking of Twister but now I might look for a FT @@^
What ya reckon?? Twister or FT ^&^

I have a twister and a fishtales...what it gets down to is what u r going to pay.....i scored my twister in excellent home use condition and payed a guy $1800 -sydney december 09.. Its probably worth alot more (bumper action wants $3600)...I bought a fishtales jan 09 -japaneese delivered machine and i payed $2200...also worth alot more.
they r totally different machines....if u live near qld, come n play both....put it this way, twister is rare, listed at only 1600 made, but i am told by sega factory worker, really only 900.... fishtales in shopped condition is a great game..great game....twister is a great game too, but a little straight forward, but has some cool features-magnetic playfield etc etc.....look, i say take the twister for being highly collectable n modern n fun, then buy a fishtales as well later....deal/negotiate with bumper action real hard on theirs...cheers..

Thanks for your thoughts-I've never bought a machine because it's rare or collectible, I've bought them because I have a history with a title or its theme or game play-Twister well I love the theme as I love the whole weather thing(does that make me a nerd?) FT well it gets a great wrap so who knows..

FT by a mile.
"Everybody underground NOW"
-
I have never played twister, so I cant rate it against FT. If you like it and the price is rite grab it, they are not easy to find. FT can be bought any week, but a low wear FT is getting hard to find. Talking to Tony Pinball Shed, he said FT is really appreciating in dollar value, and demand for them is high.
-

Have you got yours yet?

Who ever rated HS2 and FT high enough for them to be 'overated' !@#
Definately MM is most overated for me, have spent a lot of time trying to warm to it, sure it is fun, but not $7k+ fun
Closely followed by IJ + TAF

TAF gets another vote from me

I think this thread proves the theory that each and every pin is liked or loathed by different people . It all comes down to personal preference ( either to the playability or the theme ).
I own a DE Star Wars and absolutely love it . A lot of people don't like DE pins but for me it is the theme more so than the game that I love . I'm a big Star Wars fan (grew up as a kid in the SW era in the early 80's ) so being able to combine two common interests (SW and pinball in general) is a win - win situation for me .

hey guys i think mm is the most over rated never owned one but have played 2 different mm machines dident realy grab me
i will have to try again.... DAZ..
-
ok here goes
when i started at child full time 3 and a bit years ago ( owned it for near 10years next month)
i just had to have a addams and went about getting a gold .. number 32
what a let down , sold 6 months later
another i had to try ( have) STNG well this to me is the worst wide body ... or super pin
ok As for Addams we sell at least one a month and stng sell faster than we can get them ready
so i guess its all about what you like personally i say play a pin for enjoyment not for brand or title
pinball is meant to be fun.. now where is my afm or mm my 2 fav games and of course JD
mark
-
hey guys i think mm is the most over rated never owned one but have played 2 different mm machines dident realy grab me

From my experience playing MM it is a fine game on a par with others - but the price tag is way too high. Wnough people think it is the BEST pinball ever that the price stays way up there. There are many other solid games that had a much lower production run so the rarity factor isn't huge on this one (unlike Cactus Canyon) so in my opinion it has to be regarded as over-rated.
Is it twice as good as Monster Bash, TAF and the like? I don't think so.
-
Not one EM or SS mentioned !
That's because there really aren't any machines that are overrated, no one buys them anymore to "rate" them, or non one cares ^&^
I think no EM is overrated - I enjoy all EMs. Some are overpriced (Fireball), but they are great player's games.
SS machines - I think that Black Knight is overrated - especially after playing Swords of Fury. Eight Ball and Evel Knievel are overrated as well. I don't find them as "classic" as other do.

I am not familiar with EMs at all, really, so can't say any are over-rated!
SS machines - well, I know a few including Mousin' Around! and Eight Ball Deluxe (but you know my thoughts on EBD); again, though, my experience with them is limited so hard to say any are especially over-rated.

I really enjoyed reading this thread, I am personally a huge fan of fishtales, I reckon it flows well and doesn't take itself too seriously. A pinny has to have a sense of humour. I recently got to work on Cirqus Voltaire the more i played it the more i enjoyed it.
I kinda think it relates to the designers as they all have quite a distinct style. If you didn't like getaway 2, then sttng is never gonna do it for you. If you liked wcs94 then voltaire will appeal.
I'm not sure why Medieval Madness has become so popular, Ive played a fair bit of it and really enjoy the game. I think the high rating and high prices are ludicrous with some people paying in excess of 10k for an imported example that they haven't seen. Does that make it overated !@# Its a pretty good game that was under-produced but so many titles from the last days of bally williams were. I wouldn't be buying a MM because of the prospect of more coming onto the market.
Overated Pinnys in my eyes would be addams family, but i kinda think that addams has just stayed in the average persons minds more than others which makes it a popular purchase for the single pinny family.
I don't think LoTR deserves to be re produced in a gold version but pinballs seem to be the play toys of the rich and famous with some people having $30,000 worth of pinnys in a games room
Fav Pins Attack from Mars Fishtales Whitewater and scared stiff I'm really drawn to Twilight Zone probably more than the others, but i still haven't played one that was working 100% I really enjoyed WCS94, tspp, cirqus voltaire and medieval madness
