Doing a Gottlieb High Hand playfield for a mate.
This thing has seen some moisture and has some heavy wear. Years of neglect has taken has taken it's toll on this playfield.
So far the playfield has been stripped, cleaned with shellite, then ME used with metho (I do small areas at a time and continually wipe the area that I'm using ME with a clean rag with metho) , then cleaned with wax and grease remover.
Next update will be when I start the touchup process.
-
A LOT of dirt has been removed from the high traffic areas. Must of a quite a few games between cleans.
High Hand is one of my favorite Gottliebs, and I have fond memories of playing it when I was young.
Mick - Just a playfield restoration - No cabinet etc ?
-
No just the playfield the owner can do the rest %$%
The ground in dirt was actually ball swirls the photo's didn't show it.
I'm aiming for a 1 week turn around on this one, so that's going to put me under the pump. Trying to do this and the Centaur playfield at the same time.
-
Looking forward to seeing the results mick ! ^^^
-
So far have touched up some of the white, yellow and red. Notice the difference in the white of the playing cards around the centre of the playfield.
First pic shows how I touch up large area's, I use a small strip of a foam brush. The foam needs to be damp to help smooth out the paint.
The second pic shows the results, looks a bit patchy mainly due to the paint still being wet.
-
jeez,this machine looks familiar...... %.%
one of these would be nice *%*

Looks fantastic! Coming up a treat.....Are you planning on clearing the PF?

Yep CC this for sure.
-
Great stuff Mick. How many coats of RED will you need and are you sanding between coats?
Any plans for the "Gottlieb" writing in the center of the RED section ? Decal perhaps ?
I've never seen this sort of work done with the foam brush = fascinating. Keep the updates coming mate - I'd love to learn how to use this method !
^^^
-
First tried the foam brush on a very bad space shuttle playfield, find the method good for larger areas and for planking.
The red will need 2 coats, like wise the maroon. Yes you must sand between coats, I just use 800 wet and dry. I would normally use spot putty to fill up the scratches and heavy wear areas first, but this particular playfield would of been too hard/not worth the effort.
The black copyright and signature can still be seen and will be traced by hand. I don't like decals.

Didn't you look at this machine?
If so I can see why you said no :lol

So you apply the paint to address the "planking" - but do you remove the excess with a rag ?
-
With the foam it depends on the playfield, sometimes it's still best to wipe the excess off, but most of the time it's not necessary. Just a light sand when dry.
Thou I should add I'm still a novice at this, this is only the 8th playfield that I've done.

That's eight more than me, Mick %.% - I REALLY want to learn this part of restoration - and clearcoating.
Clay has a good article on playfield restoration and "planking" on his site. Well covered there..

A document I was reading last week.. ^^^ , and as soon as I saw your thread I remembered it. I didn't even know what "planking" was until I read it !!

Similar names. My name is Mick as in Michael. Nick is the owner of this.
He is a friend of mine and really knows his pinball stuff, has been a great help to me over the past 4 years that I've known him.
I'm doing this playfield as favor.

Been a slow week, pinball wise. Had to attend to that swear word WORK.
Anyway I'm getting close to clear coating this playfield. Only have the white and black to finish off.
The maroon colour proved the hardest to do. Ended up having to give it 3 coats of paint, this really tested by paint mixing skills. The maroon also dries darker for some reason.
The red area's have had 2 coats of paint. Every other colour only needed 1.
The next update will show how I attack the black.
-
Looking nice!
-
Pretty impressive for a foam brush paintjob ^^^ Any moves to use air brushing for future restorations? That's something I wouldn't mind investigating one day.
-
Great work, Mick.. Coming along nicely.
-
yes...looking good mick
-
looks fantastic, great job.
-
Another update. White is now done.
-
The black is starting. The larger black area's I use a fine paint brush and paint, but for lines and finer area's I use something different. I've tried different markers previously with varied results, but by using the rapidograph ink the results are excellent. This doesn't run when clear coated unlike sharpies etc. They also come with various tip thicknesses.
You need to use a ruler for straight lines and only do small area's at a time as the ink takes awhile to dry this avoids putting your hands back over wet ink and spreading it all over your hard work.
I normally let the ink dry 24hrs before clear coating.
Next update will be after clear coating.
-
Great update.. I was wondering how the "Gottlieb" logo was going to turn out..
Gavin did some testing with sharpies and CC.. But I don't think he used this pen..
-
Those pens are great - dont mind going over a smooth surface either.
What do you use for the inserts???
Circles are nigh on impossible to do exactly right by hand.
I have a stencil i use - can supply these if you want, just let me know inner and outer diameters and ill send some to you - FREE! - also number required.

Can't wait to see the cleared result, thanks for sharing to date.
-
All finished.
Had some rust colour bleed through from the playfield timber into some of the white and green area's. I had to retouch these back up.
I did 6 coats of clear all up. Block back after 4 with 800 wet and dry and then applied the final 2 coats.
Think that the end result isn't too bad considering how bad it was to start with.
-
here's the comparison.
-
Wow (eyes popping out of sockets), that is truly amazing! ^^^ #*# $%$
Matthew

It really is jaw dropping stuff...You should be proud. What a transformation. Well done. ^^^
-
WOW !!!
Well done Mick - that looks like a new playfield... I'm amazed and very pleased for the owner...

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
This was a little more protracted than I thought it was going to be, ended up painting almost 100% of this playfield.
For this particular playfield here's what I used:
Paints were water based acrylic and clear coat was auto acrylic. You will also notice that the black artist ink that I use isn't affected by clearing.
The first 2 coats are tact coats and are very thin coats, the next 2 are wet coats and go on heavier. The block sanding after 4 coats lets you flatten out the brush marks and any imperfections. The final 2 coats seals everything in and gives it the gloss. After the final 2 coats I lightly block back again and buff up after that I use novus 2.
-
Its an awesome restore... looks bloody great!

Awesome work Humpalot.
If you don't mind me asking, what 'grit' sandpaper did you use after the 4 coats ?

800 wet and dry used after 4 coats. 1200 to finish.

Thank you....
i can never get myself close to the top of the playfield with any grit sandpaper....
I see it as still being sandpaper ... ! !@#

Awesome job! ^^^
-
Very well done!!! ^^^
-
I've handed the playfield back to the owner, now I'm at him to get the machine back together and running so I can play a game on it. Should play well now.

Mick - Do you think the owner would allow pix of the finished machine ?
I'd love to see it all together #*#
-
Yep I intended to post pics here, when the machine is clean and back together.
-
Great Job on the Playfield mick its always good to see others methods. Came out looking like new Keep up the good work
-
Hi Mick,
Great thread, very informative ^^^
Did you brush on the clear coat?
Cheers
Dave
-
No the clear was sprayed on.
