Getaway Possum Number 2
« on: December 15, 2013, 07:49:44 PM »
So time to drag out another of the possum pins from my haul a while ago.  This is the 2nd Getaway and i had a bloke spy it in my shed and request that i get it a bit tider for him.

I did fire the machine up briefly - got a nice shower of sparks from the tantalum capacitors on the sound board - replaced all them, and it fired up OK.  The original DMD was stuffed, so put a new one in and it worked fine.  Most of the switches and coils worked, so i was happy enough that there were no major issues that i could start pulling it to pieces.

Much like all the others, cab is nasty, lots of swelling - no base in this one, but playfield is filthy but no wear and overall pretty good

So stripped the cabinet bare, and peeled the old decals off -they came off really easy just by pulling. Then time to start bogging and sanding.

I found a new filler product that is far better than any other filler i have previously used - Upol Top Stop Gold, in a sachet with hardener to add.  It is a lot more liquid than other fillers which makes it far easier to work and move around. I mix it on the cabinet, then fill the holes.  It seems to wash up easier than others, and hardens just as quickly and sands well.

Here is a pic of the filler, with a new back in the headbox installed

Speaking of "back from the dead", reckon this thread needs a bit of defibrillation!

Well i've finally got back into this one. Got my brother in law up who was great at giving a hand.

Sanded the main cab after a few more dings were cleaned up, then sprayed the inside and the new rear of headbox, then put a new base in the main cab.

Decals applied to the headbox

Really hooked in the last few days. Its been great having my dad and brother in law help out a fair bit as well. Dad had cleaned all the plastics, ball guides and wiring, while my brother in law did the legs and other bits and pieces.  A new base was installed in the cabinet as well.

Started with the front decal, after hours of sanding, bogging and priming and sanding...

All decals were installed wet method. Some say you should let them dray, but i've done quite a few now and flip the cabinet over straight after doing the first side, with no nasty surprises.  These decals went on really smooth and was only one air bubble to squeeze out.

This is the first time i have used the metal cabinet protectors - these are fantastic and the only way to go in my opinion. You place them on, trim the decal around them (so they are directly onto wood), remove the trimmed decal, then replace the protector, and screw legs onto the protector. The legs cannot touch the cabinet and ruin a new decal!

I'm missing quite a few steps here, but put some new rails on (thanks again Railways), new earth braid and all the other bits and pieces, then put the headbox on and boards installed.

I had given the boards a check over, and all were pretty good - installed a remote battery holder for the MPU and only connected the driver board and turned on. All voltages tested good, so connected everything else to find.....

I had installed the DMD upside down...

A few other jobs were making a new label for the shifter (laminated paper i printed out)

The light board was cactus

So while i was at work, my brother in law made a new one

I've polished the playfield, so will continue reassembly, hopefully not too long before a game now

Great work.
Polish the playfield? Will that damage any of the stickers on the inserts?

Simon.
