Most pointless toy/feature on a pinball playfield?
« on: February 27, 2016, 08:03:53 AM »
You guys are never short of an opinion

What is the most useless toy or feature that has been placed on a pinball playfield?

My picks
Batman TDK, the drawbridge and the joker drum
The axes on The Hobit slingshots

?

The Hobit dragon-it just moves you can't even bash it with the ball just a waste.

I was about to agree with you Pete about Batman TDK but then I started thinking about it.

Joker can was the obvious one but then I thought well do you think the same about the ship in the new Star Trek, spaceship in AFM, mummy and bride on MB, homer on TSPP.......you may see where I am going here.

These toys move but have no ball interaction, but they are interactive and tell you have done/achieved something. To me then, not useless.

Drawbridge does have ball interaction but never changes the outcome but neither does the Gumball on TZ and that is considered one of the best toys/features in a game!

Each to their own obviously but for me useless has to mean no ball interaction and no meaning/interaction.

And yes......

I clearly have too much time on my hands.  :lol

Any superfluous Stern bash toy that takes up valuable real estate on a playfield and which usually occupies a position that negatively affects the flow of the game or a crucial shot (e.g. X Men, Walking Dead et al).

It's also a lazy design way of shoehorning in a character from a licensed theme.

One of the things I love about my X Men & the Walking Dead are the bash toys.
Bashing zombies, who doesn't love bashing n killing zombies.
One mans hate is another mans love in pinball. And also, I think the bash toys on Sterns come in handy for the Stern bashers  to constantly bash. Lol.  So it's like telepathic bashing of the bash toys. Lol

Most useless thing on a pinball playfield, to me isn't a toy or anything like that, it's a ramp or a certain shot that is near impossible to hit 99 times out of 100 that makes it impossible to advance in the game cause you can't hit the shot ever (or anyone else who you ask about that same shot which is impossible).

The top drawbridge on BK2000 rarely gets used on my BK, but maybe that's because I am not trying hard enough.
Maybe it's the hard annoying shit that makes u keep coming back to pinball.

I haven't played Xmen but agree with TWD toy it's a great mech and very interactive with the games rules :) plus I love smashing the shit out of it to start well walker MB then smash it for MB jackpots.

I have grown tired of the Stern bash toy syndrome as well.
I also hate video modes with a passion.

I mentioned the worst but the best that always puts a smile on my face is sparkey on metallica because of the lighting, animation and the sound effects. I cannot think for the life of me what better animated toy there is.

You actually bash it to build up the charge, so there's a reason as well

I quite like bashing Sparkey, as you say there's a purpose.

Spinny discs, or magnets in the middle of the play field designed to piss good players off with random ball movements.
If it isn't broke, it isn't pinball.

Oh yeah,  spot on my pet hate spinners! Never thought about magnets like that, but now you mention it I hate that about Addams! Good call!!

Go back a few decades and we have Gobble Holes... designed to deliberately lose a ball for no reason other than to make a game that much harder. Sometimes Specials are awarded but more often than  not... its just a bloody hole.

Also better placed through design in the top third playfield section where oversized toys (when they are necessary) should be.

Unlike this -
