Revenge From Mars New Software 2.10 !!
« on: May 03, 2019, 07:11:14 AM »
The pinball community just keeps giving. I'd heard of the 2.0 code a while back, but 2.10 came our recently and I had to give it a go.

There's a bit of confusion out there as to the Windows software needed, so I thought I'd clarify from my personal experience, as well as the other equipment needed.

The new RFM software 2.10 is available from here: https://mypinballs.com/

You will need the Pin 2000 update manager software from here: http://www.planetarypinball.com/mm5/Williams/tech/pin2000/notes/update.html

To update the game, you need to have a Female to Female "Null Modem Cable" like this one I used: https://www.jaycar.com.au/db9-female-to-db9-female-null-modem-cable/p/WC7511

Unless you have a very old PC, you won't have the required db9 serial port, so you will need a USB to 9 pin Serial converter like this one I used: https://www.jaycar.com.au/usb-to-db9m-rs-232-converter-1-5m/p/XC4834
The adapter comes with software to enable you to set up your PC to have the required Com 1 port allocated to the USB drive you use.

As for the Windows version needed on your PC to do the update, the information on the Planetary web site specifies Windows 95 or 98. I sure don't have anything running either or those anymore! But remember, the text is just copied from the WMS site from back in early 2000. The Pinball 2000 software will work on XP according to several sources, and I used a borrowed laptop with Vista which also worked flawlessly. I am told any 32 bit operating system will work. As an experiment, I tried running the Pinball 2000 update software on a 64 bit Win 10 machine, and it would not start.

And the results - I haven't put a lot of game time on, but have heard a couple of new call outs, but most enjoyably, the ball saver now auto launches the ball back into play. Previously you have to hit the launch button, with a message on screen prompting the player to launch the ball. I think (pure guess) this was designed to ensure the player knew the ball was coming back by having to launch it manually given it enters via the dark top area. But I could be wrong.
