Dual Rubbers on Flippers & Kickers ?? ??
« on: July 21, 2009, 08:48:45 PM »
Hi All,

I have "Dual Rubbers" on my Drop-A-Card Flippers & Kickers (Gottlieb 1971).

Is this normal factory issue? or a mod from the operator to perhaps stop the ball getting stuck under the normally 1 rubber on the Kicker?

Thanx in advance.
MM.

No not factory. About a year ago in a Canberra arcade I saw dmd era machines double rubbered. I think like you mention to increase the endurance between services. Made the kickers less kicky though with the extra rubber to fight...

Cheers

I think because the original rubber sits so high on the post, the ball might often wedge itself under the rubber, instead of rebound off it.

Once the targets are dropped out the way, i guess the ball is hitting the rubber at higher speeds and getting stuck a lot.....my theory  #@#

The lower rubber is the 'added' one, and is relying on the top one keeping it in place.

Anyhow, i guess when i've cleaned up the game and re-rubbering it, i'll soon know if i need 1 or 2 rubbers after a few trial games.

MM.

errr, is my photography being picked on or praised, hard to tell hehehehe.

I used a wide depth of field to keep FOCUS on the rubbers and not the other distracting stuff.

Definately praise MM...The second one is a very nice shot.

I have duel rubbers on my AFM. The one I used to play at the cinema before I got mine used to regularly get a ball stuck under the slings, as did mine when I got it, so adding the second rubber eliminated it.

Marty, I think you probably mean "shallow depth of field" (wide aperture like an f1.4) to focus the viewer on one particular detail ;)  They do that in movies all the time to help tell the story.  Definitely praising your photos Marty, some very good macro detail shots there, nice work:)

Hey thanks Marty J, I'm glad they helped, as soon as I get a little spare time I'll do a nice DIY thread on taking good pinnie pics with any cheap point and shoot digital camera.

Actually i often use the term 'wide' because i'm using the 'wider' focal-curvature (f1.4) of lens, instead of the "centre-focus" (F22 area).  %$%

We're both right  %$% %$% %$%

This was done for several reasons ;

1 - To stop the ball from lodging under the plastics
2 - To extend the time between services
3 - Operator did not have the right sized rubber - so two are used..

The posts on EMs are designed for one rubber. They should only have one rubber.

Howdy, There's a couple of reasons why two rubbers are/can be used.
1. On drop targets, sometimes the ball goes under the rubber and lodges itself inside the rubbered area...On my 7 target Sky Jump this was a problem. Rather than use two rubbers, I placed a Bally mini-post just behind the existing rubber, in the spot where the ball keeps 'going under'. (This distance was so long on Sky Jump that I wound up using two mini-posts...one behind the '3' and another behind and between the '5' and '6'.) If you place it a couple of millimetres away from the existing rubber, then the normal rubber will still act with bounce and spring. The only difference will be that the ball will no longer go 'under' the rubber.
2. Using 2 rubbers on the flippers and sometimes on 50's style rollover lane guides reduces the 'space', and therefore gives greater average play time for each ball. ie: it makes the game play more 'liberal' or easier.
I hope this is helpful. Mark

Also when the 2" flipper was introduced the ball was slightly smaller than 1 1/16" used on games on Drop a Card's vintage, so the extra 1" flipper ring is a good idea
