Gottlieb High Hand

Doing a Gottlieb High Hand playfield for a mate.

This thing has seen some moisture and has some heavy wear.  Years of neglect has taken has taken it's toll on this playfield.

So far the playfield has been stripped, cleaned with shellite, then ME used with metho (I do small areas at a time and continually wipe the area that I'm using ME with a clean rag with metho) , then cleaned with wax and grease remover.

Next update will be when I start the touchup process.

A LOT of dirt has been removed from the high traffic areas. Must of a quite a few games between cleans.

High Hand is one of my favorite Gottliebs, and I have fond memories of playing it when I was young.

Mick - Just a playfield restoration - No cabinet etc ?

No just the playfield the owner can do the rest 

The ground in dirt was actually ball swirls the photo's didn't show it.

I'm aiming for a 1 week turn around on this one, so that's going to put me under the pump.  Trying to do this and the Centaur playfield at the same time.

So far have touched up some of the white, yellow and red.  Notice the difference in the white of the playing cards around the centre of the playfield.

First pic shows how I touch up large area's, I use a small strip of a foam brush.  The foam needs to be damp to help smooth out the paint.
 
The second pic shows the results, looks a bit patchy mainly due to the paint still being wet.

Great stuff Mick. How many coats of RED will you need and are you sanding between coats?

Any plans for the "Gottlieb" writing in the center of the RED section ? Decal perhaps ?

I've never seen this sort of work done with the foam brush = fascinating. Keep the updates coming mate - I'd love to learn how to use this method !

First tried the foam brush on a very bad space shuttle playfield, find the method good for larger areas and for planking.

The red will need 2 coats, like wise the maroon.  Yes you must sand between coats, I just use 800 wet and dry.  I would normally use spot putty to fill up the scratches and heavy wear areas first, but this particular playfield would of been too hard/not worth the effort.

The black copyright and signature can still be seen and will be traced by hand.  I don't like decals.

So you apply the paint to address the "planking" - but do you remove the excess with a rag ?

With the foam it depends on the playfield, sometimes it's still best to wipe the excess off, but most of the time it's not necessary.  Just a light sand when dry.

Thou I should add I'm still a novice at this, this is only the 8th playfield that I've done.

That's eight more than me, Mick  - I REALLY want to learn this part of restoration - and clearcoating.
