Hey Melbournites, where did all the red rattlers go? (Red Trains)
« on: September 26, 2009, 11:13:47 PM »
I came across this pic showing how alot of the old melbourne red rattlers met there end.
they would tow them to a railway station and set them alight.(Allendale railway station)
as you can see by the crap on the ground this one is not the first one that was destroyed like this.
many a time would i jump on a red rattler and take a ride to flinders street station then walk to flashback & 10 - 4 to play pinnes.
its a pity a large piece of melbourne's history ended up like this.

What memories !

I used to catch these trains to go to school around 1980 - 1982. Later they had a blue train with huge sliding doors.

Definitely catch the old red rattler to go and play GTB Spirit and Haunted House at Flashbacks. circa 1982-84

My first job was in Melbourne in 1980, and boy do I remember these horrible things! I would have had great pleasure putting the match to one of them!

yes they were the good old days.

and damien was there from 86.
he was a good tech back then.

the last red rattler ran in 1984

when i used to catch these old trains i would play games at flash back like black hole, rocky, haunted house.

then in the years after i would catch the old blue trains, silver trains and the new silver and orange trains (back then they were new) to my work at 10/4 and flash back.

good old 10/4 had 2 levels of pins.

before i was working there for pay i would go around and clean all the glasses on the video games and pins and was given 30 to 40 free games each time on various video games (they couldn't give me games on the pins because there was no service credit button and it would have put the coin count out if they gave me games on the pins)

i then started working at 10/4 in 86, spending most of my time in the upstairs change booth (evening shift). i would also come in 1 morning a week to help with emptying the money from all the games.
I was then moved to flashback by the area manager. aparrently there was money going missing so they decided to sack everyone that worked there (accept the manager) so i was moved to flash back so i wasn't sacked.

I used to love Flashback,  I remember they had an Atari Hercules at one stage.

Where was 10/4 ? I am sure I would have frequented that often if it was in Melbourne.  Was that the one that was downstairs in Swanston Street (near Flinders) or there was also one down stairs in Flinders Street itself?

I was sure I used to go to a Flashback at the top end of Bourke Street, between Russell and Exhibition on left hand side heading out.

Also remember 33 Swanston, 256 Flinders and Playtime elizabeth.

AM I right was there a Flashbak in Bourke Street?  It was over two or possibly three levels, fairly narrow frontage thou and they served fries and hamburgers on the lower level, there were booths to sit in on this lower level and framed backglasses on the walls above each booth.

Any one remember this???

so when you got that pin stuck in the stairs did they plug it in and put it in service?
or did it just sit there blocking the fire escape and being a fire hazard?  #*#
