Getaway (High Speed II)
« on: October 03, 2009, 02:24:24 PM »
Not really a restoration but one of my shop jobs. I'm just happy with the way it came out.

Getaway - german import. Wiring was really hacked. GI connectors gone, DMD board bad, all sorts of problems but it was cheap =)

Before (someone actually cleaned it to be this dirty...)

more grime

After

Cleaned everything. Repaired all wiring issues, fixed dmd board, rebuilt most major assemblies, tweaked everything.

Still have to find some plastics and find a couple of elusive screws but it plays and looks great.

Looks great Chuck,

I love this game....I rebuilt mine and decaled as well.  I found it surprisingly easy to shop this game too!

PS...I LOVE cheat mania on it too!

So this is what you do when you're not saving P2K from oblivion?

Great stuff!

Did you paint the side rails copper colored? Or are my eyes fooling me?

The insert wear looks non existant on your too!  Very lucky indeed.

Have you done any other mods Chuck?  I replaced the lamps in the traffic light and used coloured LEDs, which looked great.  I would love to do the inserts all LED's but will cost a bit.

John - side rails are natural. I think it was just because of a reflection and the lighting.

Marty - very lucky ;-) No mods, but your idea of leds in the traffic light would probably be pretty cool. I also removed the decal from the supercharger ramp (didn't like it.) I might create a new one. Toying with ideas right now.

Forgot to answer earlier. Multiple steps:

1) magic eraser - a must-have for any machine as dirty as this. I use it with a degreaser and it removes 99.9% of the ground in dirt on the playfield.
2) clean the playfield really well. Naptha or any good cleaner that doesn't leave residue should work well.
3) 3m rubbing compound - the same stuff you use on cars since the coating on pins is basically the same (diamond plate.) I use a 15k rpm chorded drill and buffing pads from harbor freight. Get the pad damp and use little blobs of compound and buff the playfield until you start seeing a mild shine. Usually two or three applications.
4) clean the playfield really well again.
5) Use a paste wax - turtle wax or meguires works really well. apply wax, let sit, use same drill with a buffing pad. I do this twice.
6) one more paste wax application and hand rub.

shiny playfield.

The game looks so simple at first glance but offers so much when you actually play it. The theme and the gameplay go hand in hand. Lots of flow and super fast. The great thing is that they are pretty cheap here in the states.

Came up great, and it is a very enjoyable game in my opinion.

Trouble is that in Australia these fetch very good money.
