World cup (1978)

Hey guys, I am have been looking for a project pin, (as if my life is not complicated enough, especially when I know nothing about them, my Getaway was causing me enough issues) and have been offered a World Cup 1978 machine. Has Head box, (Missing boards inside) Playfield is populated, missing some plastics, Back glass is in good condition. It has been offered to me for $300. What does one of these machines sell for in working condition as a guide as I have not seen many around.

I have been haunted lately with items from 1978. Might be an omen.

Pretty sure ddstoys will have some good tips for you as he just brought one of these back from the dead.

Me personally i'd advise you judge the backglass for yourself.  Take a look at the back of it.  Most of them are pretty flakey.  One persons "Good" is anothers "Hammered"

Couldn't really see a nice functioning one of these going for more than 1200 on eBay.

I'd probably hold off for an early SS Bally or Stern from the same era.  As your first project an early SS Williams might be a little harder to tame, as they are pretty temperamental old girls.  However, YMMV

Oh, just to add......

There are new combo cpu/driver boards available for these games that eliminate a lot of the 30 year old problems these games have.

If the backglass and playfield are indeed in good condition, it might be well worth your while if you can get it all happening for a few hundred on top of the initial purchase price.

The backglass is the key here, and the other thing to check is if this game has electronic sounds or chimes. If it was a machine that was manufactured with chimes - then check if they are there.

If you are happy with the playfield, backglass and cabinet, you will need the Combo board, a power supply board and you didn't mention if the game had displays ?

You may need to replace the connector and pins - depending on the condition.

I'd say a World Cup would fetch $1200 - $1600 in reconditioned working order.

I sold my world cup for $1500 it to needed all boards and most displays. The original backglass was hammered but was a fun game to play once it was all finished.   But as said they are very temprimental to work on

wow thanks for all the advice. Nino, thanks for all the info on the boards, you have saved me heaps of guess work. I am fairly certain the power supply was there and the display boards were there but not sure if they worked.

I think I will just buy it and do what I can, I have ti get my hands dirty sooner or later, and I will not make things any worse from what they are. When I get it Nino, might get you to come over for a beer and look over, then again maybe not, you might tell me it is completely stuffed and I really messed things up lol.

Either way expect a bombardment of posts from myself and this might get a little interesting.

Well you'll always get your money back if you get pissed off with it and decide to pass it on.

Wouldn't hurt to get some pics uploaded here if possible before you commit.
