Breaking News on my world cup
« on: March 14, 2010, 11:07:34 PM »
Hi All,
I have some great news, My world cup is working. #*#.
My 15 year old son fixed it. Something so simple, the dip switches were incorrectly set for my game.
The instructions have a small detail that was missed. The left two switches were not supposed to be used.
Anyway machine fired up so thats great. Only two problems now. The left flipper is dead & i need. 4 new displays. Not sure whats wrong with flipper. Hoping its a contact i will check tomorrow.
A big thank you to Daniel For giving me the spinner & decals.
If anyone has any 6 digit displays in good working order please let me know.
Once again a big thank you to all for your on going help & support.  $#$

I am very happy that it fired up.
Three displays are working but 2 of them are missing digits & player 4 display is dead. I swapped player 4 to player 3 to confirm that it was gone.
I read somewhere that if one display has a problem it could effect others. Not sure if this is true but i plan to replace the dead display first to see what happens.  So if i can get one display i will start with that.I also need to work out the door diagnostics. I may need your help on this daniel.

If you plug a good display into the one thats missing digits are you still missing digits?

And as for the questions ask away.

 Yes,

I just swapped a good display & it is missing digits when swapped.

 What does this mean?

Display is good - driver board has problems.

My player 4 display is dead.
I was told that if a display is not working it can effect the other displays, is this correct?

 What does this mean?

As Ajlaird said this suggests the displays look to be good, so the problem is master display or in my opinion, quite likely to be interconnector cable issues. I have a few WMS of this vinatge and most exhibit these display problems at least some of the time.

As a first step I'd look to repinning all the master display to player display and cpu to master display interconnector cables. This is pretty cheap to do and will increase reliablility. As a test with the machine on try giving the cables a bit of a wriggle and observe if this changes things.  If it does then this adds weight to the dodgy cable idea.  Also note that the way the displays are strobed is in pairs - (P1 & P3) as one pair and (P2 & P4) as the other so if the same digit is stuffed on, for example, P1 & P3 then this may suggest the cpu / display cable.

I can confirm that player 1 & player 3 are missing the same digits. (00-000)
Can i swap player two (Working) display cable onto player 1 display to check cable?

Yep, swapping known working with something not working is a great way to troubleshoot.

NO ABSOLUTELY NOT - DO NOT DO IT WITH WMS DISPLAY CABLES - THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE - they have different pinouts at the master display end. At the player display unit they obviously have to be the same because the display boards are identical.

Go to www.firepower.com (I think that is the site address, it's blocked at work) and get the drawing for the display board, have a look at the descriptions for the wire connections along the top of the board. Notice that they are not identical between player connections. This means you can not just swap them over.  You may damge displays by trying this.
