Em flippers making 'grinding' noise
« on: October 10, 2010, 03:17:53 AM »
Hi all,
I've been out and about looking at EM pinnies lately and noticed something when playing them
when the flippers are held down the machine (coil?) makes a sort of whirring / ginding sort of noise
is this a normal thing?

Cheers,
Ben

Older AC flippers can develope a vibration when held. The coil may be loose in the mounting brackets, sleeves or linkages may be also worn. This may explain the noise you describe.

Hmmm - mine buzz, and they have a PBR kit through them as well as new coils?  ^.^

Usually the coil stops / plungers are worn and possibly magnetised. Sometimes, adjusting the EOS can remedy this issue (especially with new flipper kits).

Shane - new coils won't make a difference  ^^^

The whole lot is a new PBR rebuild kit, coils and sleeves, plungers and links as well as the nylon bush and the EOS switches.

I have devoted zero time to sorting it - the EOS's are okay, wiring looks okay. The bottom pair of flippers are piss weak too - even with the new bits. So something is up the shit somewhere!

Set as per Clay's guides - the flippers fall "up" when the playfield is raised...  !!!

Sounds as though you have got it all setup as per guides, not sure why they would be weak?
I put a kit through my QD and the left still has a slight buzz half the time, the right is silent, but both are strong and tx is set to normal tap, the buzz is annoying but i have not spent too much time trying to rectify, let us know if you find a solution.

Cheers
Dave

I also put a full kit (including new coil stops and coils) on my Williams Lady Luck and both are buzzing when at full up position .. haven't spent much time yet trying to solve it .. have fiddled with EOS adjustment once which made a slight improvement.

I swapped coil stops with the replay unit on my Williams Blue Chip which made a big improvement .. those ones don't buzz any more.

I did briefly wonder if Steve has put the wrong coil stops in the pack?

i.e. He's given me SS ones instead of EM?

Clay's guides mention that one somewhere...

A possibility. It would explain the buzzing..
