Rocky & Bullwinkle Data East DMD issue
« on: February 02, 2011, 12:56:22 AM »
Hi all,
I purchased an old Rocky & Bullwinkle machine in October last year and all has been working well. On Saturday, it had been on for around 20 minutes and then looked up to the DMD to find there was absolutely no display at all. I've re-seated all connectors, but am unsure what to check next. Also had a look at the fuses on the various boards, but at first glance, they seem ok.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Adam.

First thing to check is the voltages supplying the DMD......

again +1 on homepin's comment.

does it work again after the pin has been turned off for a few hours?

try testing the dmd display in another pin?

Well, since I last posted, voltages supplying the DMD have been checked and the right voltage is coming in.

There was a problem where the F2 fuse holder had broken and this was replaced with a brand new fuse clip and fuse. All other fuses and cables were checked, but still no luck.

Today, I turned the machine on and there was no sound at all and I can't even start a game like normal. Scratching my head as to where to look next. Any clues or pointers as to where I should start looking or testing again? My friends will be coming over for our weekly pin repair and movie night, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam.

You two seperate problems. The Display issue sounds like it could be the display itself if the voltages are reading correct. Still might be a connector issue. The sound problem might be a result of reseating the connectors !

Check the simple things - like the ground for the speakers - refit all connectors on the sound board. Should be a simple case of isolating the connector ?

Since posting, I re-checked all the fuse clips. It seems that F1 and F2 on the power supply board are really loose and about to totally snap off. They are not gripping the fuses tightly. Looks like this will be the next fix on Rocky & Bullwinkle...the saga continues.

This is actually fairly common and some of the guys will replace fuse clips as a matter of course when getting a new pinball machine.

First point of action on DE machines - replace the fuse clips on all boards. Get rid of strange problems like these !

Update: Replaced all fuse clips and a complete rebuild of the power supply board has now fixed the DMD issue.

Thank you all for the input!

+1 on this tip. there is not one data east pin around that i have seen with good original fuse holders.
