Another update on this restore thread.....  I installed the restored apron onto the playfield, and I also had to tear down the 2nd coin door and clean that up completely with autosol and ranex.  Once I'd put the coin door back together, I gave most areas of the inside only a very light covering of Penetrol using just a Q tip.  The results when dried were just outstanding.  The insides of the coin door just shine and this will hopefully keep that damn rust out.  THe machine had been an Italian delivered machine and the coin mechs were all set for Lire

Here are some pics of that coin door before I'd stripped it down and cleaned same

Here are some pics of the completed 2nd coin door after I'd cleaned and rebuilt it and treated with Penetrol.  I also installed the custom coin inserts and fired it up and everything works perfectly.

I had a few other things that I had to tweak before taking the headbox off ready for moving the machine into the house.  I was able to move the machine from the garage and into the house over the weekend.  I wanted to get it onto the 2nd floor and had to navigate up the narrow set of stairs using just a trolley.  What a job.  I was sweating like a Mexican hooker.  Got it done though.  I installed the brand new black legs that I got from PBR in the US and they look great.

I set the machine up in the boys "media room" alongside the Super Mario Bros machine.  Here are some pics.  I still need to install the custom topper so a few more pics will follow.  The machine has full leds everywhere.  There is some ghosting on the GI's but the backbox really nails it.  The alien really comes alive with leds and I hope the pics demonstrate that.  I'm not too sure whether the Pinball Pro subwoofer kit that I installed makes any difference at all to be honest over the stock 30 year old speaker.

The machine is running really well.  I raised the rear legs right up to give the game more ball speed and it is working well.  Not a hugely fast game but certainly a big improvement.  My kids just love this thing.

I thought I'd also throw in a few pics of the Super Mario Bros machine that I also installed leds into.  Its in magic condition

Once I move the machine into its final position and install the topper, I just need to finish up the 2nd Spacies machine

You may remember the pics on page 6 of this thread relating to the 1st coin door that I stripped and cleaned up.  Here are those pics

One thing that really pissed me off is that some of the insides of that door have begun to rust.... barely 3 months after I cleaned them up.  See the pics below.  Therefore I will need to strip that one down, re-clean and treat with some Penetrol

that looks fantastic  $%$

well worth all your hard work mate  ^^^

as far as the rust goes it needs a clear coat over it as soon as it's cleaned. I clear coated the LAH lock down bar after I removed all the rust (and zinc plating) and it has been several months and still no rust.
I wipe it over with thinners first to make sure there are no contaminates on the surface before clear coating. Just make sure you don' chip / scratch any clear coat off when assembling or else the rust will start where the raw metal has been exposed.

Final pics of this machine with the new Topper installed.  It really looks sensational up close.  Now I will be finishing the other machine but I won't be uploading anything further on that as its basically a mirror restore.  I am pretty stoked with the results given I'd never touched a pinnie previously.  An enormous amount of time and quite a few $$$ went into this project, but I really had a good time and I learnt allot.  Once again, many thanks to the guys who I mentioned in page 1 of the thread for their assistance and guidance (INCLUDING BEAKY who really came through for me with making the boards new again and fixing some niggling issues).  Hope all have enjoyed this thread.

PS - If anyone wants me to post what items were replaced and what is brand new etc, just let me know - I can do that also

what you have done with the LEDs behind the alien in the backglass is AMAZING. You should be proud of your work, Jase - that is one sweet Space Invaders.
