I,ve been working on a method of BG repair over the past couple of months. My first challenge was to aquire a photo of a original BG to work off. The only image available was a photo from IPD which was taken on an angle, making a exact copy quite difficult. I was not confident enough to spray/paint the artwork as it was quite complex. I then had an idea to print onto adhesive clear vinyl, mirror the image and stick to the BG. Followed by placing a white adhesive vinyl over the top to allow the area to be translucent. Here's the process below:
1. After a scan of the missing artwork, new artwork was hand drawn on a printed copy of the scanned image and scanned back into CAD software (Corel).
2. Then a trace over the hand drawn image is made and then other areas redrawn.
3.(This is the difficult part) Matching the original BG artwork colours to match the print colour onto the clear vinyl. This was done starting with rough pantone colours and converting to RGB colours in CAD software. There's alot of trail and error involved here.
4.When all artwork is completed, the repair image is mirrored, printed and stuck to the rear of the BG.
5.White adhesive vinyl is then used to cover. This deepens the printed colours and gives your translucent image.
This is my first attempt at this method, and while not perfect has cleaned it up considerably. Below are some images of the process.
