EM pinnie not resetting properly
« on: January 31, 2009, 07:49:29 PM »
On my Centigrade 37 pinball when pressing credit button to register a game the scoring reels do not go back to zero therefore may take another one or two credits before all the scoring reels are back at zero to register the start of play.Hope someone can help Cheers Les.

I take it the score reels do eventually reset to zero from what you have said Les...

It sounds to me like the grease on the score reels has gone hard, so I would be pulling each score reel out, cleaning them up, applying new grease to the shaft that the reel spins on, and re-assemble. Also, clean and adjust each switch in the score reel assembly, making sure that each one opens and closes when it should by manually pulling the coil plunger in to make the score reel move.

Others on here may have a better answer for you though...

In addition to Owen's suggestion - clean all the contacts in whichever score reel is playing up. I assume just one or two, and not all are not resetting ?

Once a game commences - do any points score before serving the first ball ?

Sometimes - if the game has not been played for a while, it fixes itself in time. Contacts start to work again and the machine will be trouble free for years.

I generally don't put grease on either Tony, but I've had quite a few old EM techs say that I should be, so I thought it better to suggest it.

Just my 2.2c worth, I tried vaseline, couldn't find anything else light, for years but as others warned it turns into a gunky mess soon after.
Lately I've tried PTFE (teflon) dry film lubricant which works well. Can buy it from auto shops.
I think, keep away from silicone lubes around electrical contacts as it is an insulator and can be hard to remove from contacts.
EM score motors wanted- nonworking, broken, burnt, etc..

That's a fair point arcadoz, ptfe is better than using normal grease for lubricating gears and shafts - but don't use it on plungers.

Ever notice that plastic coil sleeves are smooth ? During production - some EMs had copper or brass sleeves. Nice and smooth. Plungers are usually smooth as well.

Take any plunger and toss it in a tumbler. Install a new coil sleeve. You cannot get any better than that.

Dropping oil, grease or any other lubricant into a plunger was a method used by operators who did not want to spend the time to replace worn coil sleeves. In other words - it is a "short cut". It is also an advertisement and attractant to all the dirt dust and grime to accumulate on the plunger and act like "gum" over time.

Coil sleeves are cheap these days.. Cheaper than any lubricant !

My opinion....just keep em clean and dry.
That'll do it for years  to come.
All your doing now is cleaning 40 years of dirt dust and shit.
Clean it and you won't have a problem for another 20 years at least. Well.....at 10.....maybe.... !@#
A long time though %$%
Ya just gotta luv an EM.

Check the adjustments on the 10, 100 and 1,000 point relays in the head to the right of the score reels?

I know the machine well - Single player wedgehead.. But I need to confirm which of the reels keeps turning after a coin / credit is used.

10 100 1000 or 10000 ?

When pushing the credit button all the reels will move and after about 3 or4 number changes to reset back to zero all of the reels will stop at the same time and this may take 1 or 2 more credits to register the start of play.It doesnt seem to be any particular reel.
