LG Scanner Mouse - Possible small area playfield scan solution
« on: September 27, 2011, 08:13:25 PM »
I was in Officeworks today and spotted the following new product for $129 - the LG Scanner Mouse.  Its basically a mouse with a built in scanner.  The salesperson said the software included does its own stitching up of multiple scanning passes (Eg; scanning an A4 page left to right, move down and then scan right to left etc until the image is complete).  Again not sure how good that would work or quality etc

Here's a link to the item:

I was thinking it "just may" be a possible option for doing small area playfield scans so that we could make decals?  Its a very new product but if anyone has used it, opinions would be great.  I might buy it and test it and if its crap take back within 7days...

Regards

sounds exciting and interesting! a useful gadjet. not sure about the durability of it and wouldn't the scanner get scratched? and going backto a cable to save room in mouse may get in the way when scanning a playfield but would definately be useful! what resolution would you want to scan a playfield at? i only use it scans for colour and outline

I went and had a look and a play for 5 minutes today, my findings were:

- functions as a regular mouse and then as a scanner if you select a special side button, and the mouse is a little more bulkier than regular
- it has a clear window on the underside which is spaced a few mm off the surface so shouldn't get scratched affecting image
- with a fairly up to date computer it is quite quick to scan, and works easily by waving the mouse around (not needing to do in a straight pattern etc) and you can easily see what you missed on the screen and just go to that point and scan.
- ideal for text as has text recognition built into the software.
- max size is A# scanning, and need other software to stitch together - so a negative for a full playfield.
- graphic recognition is decent, and with colour blending it is a bit average like with a photo, not quite right with the colour but that is possible the computer screen used for the demo.
- BIG negative is that the surface has to be smooth and if you lift the mouse ever so slightly off the surface the scanning from that point locates differently and you have to start again - so you need to concentrate and not lift the mouse at all.
- works on XP and higher, 1 gb ram and duo processor minimum.
- doesn't work on a mac - I'm out, bummer was tempted.

overall definitely a good idea, but you need to take care not to lift.

Update to an old thread, I scored one of these LG scanner mouse today for my bday and even though it says on the box that not compatible for a mac I checked LG website and there is a download and bingo it works.

You have the option to do low, medium or hi res scanning but not a specific DPI that I can find yet.

Will try scanning a portion of a playfield soon. and maybe attach a sample for a example.

Keen to see the results, look forward to the next update.

Well here is my first test scan, and I am sure there are some settings that I can tweak.

I set everything up to the maximum quality just to see what it is capable of and I may not need to go that high. Since I wanted it to assist with some insert decal design I scanned the skateball playfield still with mylar and still dirty. First thing I noticed the scanner doesn't like the deep purple - turns it almost black and even with adjusted hue, saturation etc it doesn't improve it at all. Though I did process as a jpeg and there are 7-8 different files types that the scan can be saved as so maybe something may change it's appearance though think it is related to the scanners 4 leds for lighting ????.

On the box it says it can do a A3 size scan but because I set the quality levels up to the maximum the scan size is reduced. The file Skateball Scan As Is unchanged was 5.9mb in size (330 x 280mm at about 4/5ths scan memory size allowable at the highest setting) and obviously the image you can see is reduced it to show you all. I took the image into Illustrator and you can zoom up to a full 21 inch screen on 3cms of the image and the scan is quite tight. There is a bar top left letting you know the image size because when you are moving the mouse around the image is joining and correcting itself constantly and you can move the scanner mouse slowly in any direction - and does not really distort, so pretty good. So to scan a full playfield I think you would have to do (at the highest quality) about 8-10 scans and lay them over each other in like illustrator to complete the image. Those who have a windows computer the mouse comes with additional software to stitch scans together but not available for us mac users. The lead is slightly painful but I didn't get setup properly - I went for a quick impatient scan test to see results method. Don't lift the mouse otherwise start again and lastly push the stop scan button and patiently wait 30 secs at highest res for the scan to process into a image - if you don't wait and push the stop / start button again it starts a new scan and you loose the last scan  ^&^. The scan programme is basic but edit mode lets you rotate the image, crop and adjust hues, brightness, saturation and contrast and probably more for the pc user.

For $109 good value for the odd scan and more accurate than taking a photo as then you would have to muck around with it to get the actual size. I brought the image into Illustrator and the image was dam close to actual size.

So overall pretty good for what it is.

Interesting - could be helpful when there is a worn area, so you can scan, repair and print a decal. Worth having in the armory I thin, thanks for the info.
