Flash Pinball full of bugs,,,, Ggggrrrrrrr
« on: May 02, 2012, 02:01:00 PM »
As much as I love pinball and fixing them when things go along for a while with no problems then another fault comes along  !!!.
Haven't had a good run with my Williams Flash, its starting to cost me $$ and is starting to annoy me to so It might be the next game to eject from my collection  !!!.
Thought I would bring it into the 21st century and get a Rottendog 327 CPU for it, had the new board in for over a month with no issues at all till the weekend when things started to go wrong.
Now I have two switch rows out ^&^    why me  ^.^
Checked the machine right over before I put the new CPU in and all was good.

I know its annoying but remember you are talking about a machine that has recently turned 33 years old and was designed to last for 5 .

My Firepower intermittently plays up too , which is worse cause its an intermittent fault
I need more room ! and more $$$

If you want it reliable you really need to repin all the connectors and replace all the switch diodes.

If in doubt, repin or replace connectors i say!
I know its a pain in the arse job to do but it really is the ONLY way to go.

Thanks for the tips guys  ^^^    Suppose its good in a way that the machines doo brake down sometimes so you can seek out the fault and fix it, might learn a thing or two.

Don't eject Flash from your collection. Contact Ken (Skybeaux) or Andrew (Beaky) and have the boards bullet proofed. Advice so far is 100% - Interconnect boards, dry solder joints and dodgy connectors / pins are the main culprits with WMS sys4/6 systems.

when you say down i assume you mean dead?

first connector to check is 2J3 on the driver board (top right)
you need to figure out if it is a board fault or a wiring fault first.

Check very closely where the board mounts to the backbox.  From memory one is very close to either the switch columns or rows header pin.

It could be grounding it out

With thanks to Homepin I received a replacement  IC (74HCT240N) for my Rottendog 327 CPU.
Replaced the bad chip and now all switches are working
Flash is now playing flawlessly.      #*#

I loved Flash from the first time I played it 30+ years ago. Got to buy one recently which had major board problems. I was prepared to get it fixed as I think it is a top game. The genius of Ken Shipley got it working beautifully. Glad that you have had success with it.
