What is the best way to store playfields ? - design idea
« on: September 27, 2012, 10:49:48 AM »
Just curious as I now have a few playfields, some I don't have to worry about and some I want to preserve for any future need.

I heard of some people store them under their beds flat and horizontal (but worry about dust and the absorption of moisture) and others vertical elsewhere (but worry about falls and rubbing).

I was wondering what your thoughts were on a custom timber plywood case that had the 2 the long edges routed wide enough to allow the playfield to slide in along with a felt strip to protect the playfields edge. This case could house maybe 5 playfields and stand on it's edge so the playfields would be stored in a vertical position on their sides (meaning the case is approx 1200mm long x approx 650mm high x 100mm thick). The benefits I believe would be that it would keep the moisture off the playfields, it would keep them straight and they would not be stored with plastic etc hard against the cleared surface.

Additional bonus this could be a good safe way to transport playfields.

Any thoughts / advice would be much appreciated.

I use this to store mine   ( and it is portable)  well its on rollers,  it has grooves on three sides to keep the play fields level / straight, will take standard Wms and  Wide body pfs, Ive had pf in it for up to 10
years with out and problems.

Gregs cabinet is a good idea... playfields are held in with slots and with the doors closed it eliminates dampness and temperature variations both of which will warp a PF in no time... once gone it can be a real bugger to get out.
I was always taught that timber should be stored standing up not lying flat and always out of any sunlight. Flat or standing it doesnt really matter so long as you eliminate temp variations between the top side and bottom... this is how timber curls.
My PF's are stored standing on an edge in a room that never gets hot and cold etc. I still though turn them around every couple of months as extra insurance.
