Power Supply gotcha !
« on: March 10, 2009, 11:01:13 AM »
Hey all,

Just thought i'd share a recent experience while overlooking a pin being fixed at Marks last weekend....

The problem was no Volts to most of the coils, yet all the fuses were ok and this pin worked earlier that morning.

When the power was turned off, i noticed one of the LEDs on the P.Supply board was still on, and not going out for quite some time.
I immediately thought "There's nothing loading this supply rail" and that's why it's not discharging/extinguishing the LED.

As soon as Ian went to grab the power connector on the PCB, the LED went out almost immediately, we then realised it was an intermittent (open) connection either in the connector or solder joint.
As it turned out, it was a dry solder joint on the PCB on the rear of the power connector to the coils.
Moving the machine earlier that morning must have been enough to shake open the joint.

So, this goes to show it's not always "what your power supply tells you when it's ON", but "what it tells you when it's OFF" !!!!

Hope this helps in future......
MM.

Great post Marty.

Sometimes its the smaller details that can cause all sorts of issues - and connectors are one of those components that can mislead even the hardenend Pinball Guru !

Seems you worked it out - So has Mark got you on the payroll yet ?
