even without the data cable connected most DE sound boards will give some speech and or sound when powered up
strange it wasn't doing this,
maybe with the ribbon cable half on it won't do the above. 
That makes sense because the sound wasn't completely gone, just broken between speech and background sounds. Maybe it was the ribbon cable?
