Data East Starwars intermittent sound problem

Hi Guys,

I have this sound issue on my SW at the moment. It's been great for around the last 5 to 6 months and then the other night it started again. In the past the sound board has been re-pinned and the CN2 connector has been replaced. This was done because the sound would come and go when I wobbled this connector.
The braid wires from the speakers to the cabinet were also nearly frayed in two so I soldered then back up. Any other ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

I had a low voltage reading at the sound board on my JP, replaced the bridge located on the power supply (not the two mounted to the back box, the one on the board) and that cured a sound board issue. Bit of a shotgun approach, but for the couple dollars a bridge costs, worth a look as these do seem to fail over time.

when the sound is not working in game play does it make some sounds when you turn the machine off then on?
do you still get a thud when you power up the machine or some hum from the speakers
remove the board and check the back of cn2 and 3 for dry / cracked solder joints.
also check and make sure the pins on cn2 are not badly pitted and black.
check that the volume control connector (cn3) on the sound board is also ok

Thanks Andrew, yes there's still the thud when I turn the machine on. The pins on cn2 look fine but I haven't had the board out so ill check that tomorrow.

CN2 and CN3 looked pins looked fine but I reflowed them anyway. I also noticed that the ribbon cable from This board to the back of the DMD had come loose on the DMD side. I may have done that while removing the sound board, don't really know. Anyway what ever I did seems to have worked....for the moment anyway.
I've had the machine on for the past couple of hours without issue and played it on and off so fingers crossed all is now good.

even without the data cable connected most DE sound boards will give some speech and or sound when powered up
strange it wasn't doing this,
maybe with the ribbon cable half on it won't do the above.  !@#

That makes sense because the sound wasn't completely gone, just broken between speech and background sounds. Maybe it was the ribbon cable?   !@#
