Bally/Stern High Voltage Kits
« on: January 24, 2011, 12:37:13 PM »
Does anyone know the best place in Aus to get a full kit for early Bally/Stern driver regulator board high voltage kits.
RTBB sell the transistors, and Big Daddy in the US sell the full kits, but I can't find anyone local who sells the full kit.
Jaycar only have the resistors and small caps.
I have 2 boards to repair.

Here are the links to Big Daddy inthe US:

Check out this thread - http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=158.0

I list the parts required to rebuild the entire HV and 5v sections. I made my own kit - all parts were brought from GPE. You should be able to source the parts from futurelec.

Thanks, I will give them a try.
How long do they normally take to deliver the parts?

Futurlec 'pretend' to be Australian but all goods are posted from Thailand. I have never had a fast delivery from them - averaging about 3 to 4 weeks but others report better delivery times than that. Be aware the goods will be posted from Thailand, their site doesn't mention this anywhere - their prices are very good....

Yep I thought that might be the case.
I just searched their site and they don't have the 1N5275A Zener diodes, the closest I could find was: 1N5383B 150V 5W Zener Diodes.
Would these do as a substitute?

Thanks Ian, I gave it a go with two 75v zeners and it works fine.

Man these boards are hard to get parts for!
I went to AZtronics yesterday and got a heap of parts (to do three boards) and now have one fully working.
One of the other boards has good voltages now but the left flipper is not working.
The other also has good voltages but it won't eject the ball and puts 11,000 points on the score when starting the game.
I found a brief mention in the pinrepair guide that mentioned the 74LS154 chip stating "it can fail but rare".
Well I compared that chip to the other boards with my meter and it looks like its gone.
Of course Jaycar have 74LS153's and 155's but no 154, they have 74HC154 but it is in a smaller package.
So I am now on the lookout for a 74LS154 chip.

I did find a site in WA that have the chips listed I emailed them today for info and prices.

Actually most of the parts used on games of this era are DEAD EASY to get as they were mostly common generic parts. Member here Skybeaux has pretty well all these chips at very sensible prices.

This company Worldwide is just up the road from me and he's a great bloke to deal with. He used to have a shop but because of high rents and the fact that most of his sales are by mail order he runs the "shop" from his garage at home.
He can mail order anywhere and takes credit card over the phone and has tons of chips and other parts that we all use regularly.

Give him a go if you cant get it locally ^^^

Perhaps I am being a bit picky?
When I repaired a couple of Williams Driver boards last year, Jaycar had EVERY part and cheap too.
I guess I am talking about being able to run down the local electronics store and being able to get parts.
Then again places like Rockby's, Futurlec and Altronics have only about every second part I have looked for, only slightly more than the local Jaycar.
Maybe I am looking in the wrong places, or is the selection a bit slim in Adelaide?
There are plenty of USA places to get parts, but when your in the middle of a repair you don't want to wait 3 weeks for parts.

Thanks for your advice Homepin, I will have a talk to Skybeaux.

Cheers

Todd who runs Big Daddy is a personal, longtime friend and he ships quickly. If you can't find what you need locally, I'm sure he would appreciate the business and will do a top notch job for you.
