Stern Production Numbers

I am not sure if I have seen this thread elsewhere before or if it was a general comment amongst another discussion. I got the info off Pinside which was interesting and thought a good place to check out is within the DMD review section as that is the most closely related field.

As you know Stern do not release production number so it comes down to estimate numbers based on serial numbers. It is believed that Mr Pinball price guide gives a close estimate within 10 machines.

Newer games are just too early to tell on most titles but so far it looks like there are at least over 500 Tron Pros that were made up to this date.

I know many have said Simpsons outproduced LOTR but I really think many (even employees at Stern) just presume this because there were MANY MORE RUNS of Simpsons than LOTR.

The estimated LOTR runs were 7 total:
1600-2000-500-500-250-150-150 in that order... adds up to 5150

For TSPP the run estimations are as follows (13 RUNS TOTAL):
600-500-200-300-400-600-500-300-300-250-250-50-100 in that order... adds up to 4400

I have arranged these in order of how many games were estimated to have been produced:

Here is the list for 1999 to 2013 inclusive, which I will keep updated with Mr Pinball Price Guide Numbers if / when I get them as they are probably the most accurate

Can those that remember the LE qty's let me know and I will update this post - at least it is a reference, how accurate is only Stern's knowledge

Each Stern has a production number if you pop the playfield and look to your left under the pf to the left of the flipper mech.

eg my Iron Man has No:372

I have kept serial numbers and machine numbers (example 2442 of 2500 Batman Forever) for all my 40 x dmd machines....I find it interesting to see how many machines were made, and what number along the production line each machine was......

The AC/DC Pro I have, I have also kept the machine number for it as well (cant remember the exact number it is but it was a number over 500 which must mean they planned an initial run of AC/DC Pros of 500 before they started another run of LE or Premium or whatever) etc.....

Some of those numbers on that list look very very low...Shrek should be 500 not 50 for example......the others, who knows, but its a start !

I wouldn't have a clue on what numbers are accurate but no place like the present to start a list and update when a higher number comes along.

"Hi, I just signed up on Pinside for the sole purpose of responding to this thread. I purchased my Iron Man machine NIB late in the game (March of last year). Upon completing the purchase I was told that I just bought the last Iron Man that Stern produced. I didn't think about it too much until one day when I was on the phone with Stern & I inquired about it. I was told that they would look into it. A week or two later it was confirmed to me that my game was produced on the last day of the production run. I was also told that they had no way of knowing if it was actually the last game that came off the line. Honestly I think they know but just did not want that info released to the public. It should also be noted that they tracked my machine by serial number & not the number on the playfield.

Now with all that being said, my playfield is number 1014. Although I would like to think that there were exactly 1014 Iron Man machines produced & that I have the last one, I would say it is a pretty safe bet that there were less than 1100 made...... and probably less than 1050...... and very possibly less than 1025...... and maybe even exactly 1014.

As an old man who grew up playing EMs & 1st generation SS machines I would like to make a couple other comments about Iron Man:

1) It is my opinion that Iron Man is the best "player's machine" made in the last 30 years. Note that I said "my opinion" !!

2) When you hear people say that Iron Man is "over rated" or that it "feels cheap", what they are really trying to say is ............"I played Iron Man & it kicked my butt; I don't want any part of that machine, it fights back "

Unfortunately, playfield numbers arent the best way to track machine build numbers, because u can have playfield number 1014 placed into machine build number 880. I have seen this on alot of newer Sterns. They obviously make more playfields than they do games because they get made in batches and they have to produce an overun for spare playfields.

What I would like to see on this gents Ironman is any other machne numbers under the playfield, espescially under the apron area but on the base of the playfield, as well as on the playfields end face, apron end. These stickers are there 95 percent of the time, u just have to look hard

Either way, it seems Iron man may have reached around the 800 to 1000 ? numbers. Finding the correct numbers on this Ironmans under playfield could be the key.

I know Borgy also took the last Tron Pro Version 2 that they recently produced.
He mentioned that to me in a email when we were discussing what machines he had at home, and what he enjoyed.

Heard from AMD that they only brought about 40 x IM's to Aus
