Star Wars Trilogy Tie Fighter coil problem
« on: February 09, 2013, 11:36:49 AM »
As stated, I just bought this machine and during play the lights around the tie fighter flash and the tie fighter should rock back and forth but doesn't.
I have traced the wiring and connections are fine.
I am just wondering if the Coil with core (090-5054-00) in the tie fighter is faulty which is essentially a magnet reverse polarizing to rock it.

How would I go about testing this with a multimeter to positively prove it is faulty.

Number 4 on the picture

Now the x-wing is showing problems, it won't rotate to shoot the ball out and also the cannon has stopped firing in and out  !@# !!! so all 3 main features have died

Thanks heaps

Darren

I checked my Star Wars Trilogy once. Go into menu settings and u can fire it via the test menu.

You should hear a relay clicking for it, and the tie fighter should move.

Also, make sure the option for it is turned on in game settings. One of the later ROMS from memory allowed it to be turned off or on. Hope it helps.

Also make sure there is a spring attached to the tai gmfighter to pull it away from the coil or else it sits on the coil and doesn't move.

Thanks Caveoftreasures, just tried that, no:26 on the coil test is for the Tie Fighter and it didn't move or make a noise  &^&

I have no option to turn it of or on either... Only one for the X-wing...

I'd say I would be leaning towards faulty coil so far.

Unfortunately I can't find an Aussie seller that sells them unless I go to Marco Specialties Pinball Parts  O.S  @.@

What Ohm is the coil reading?  I take it both wires are still secure

From memory it was 4.3 ohm when I checked yesterday,,, anything under 3 is stuffed isn't it or am I thinking of I.C chips.

Ohm reading depends on the size of the coil. I don't have anything to compare it to. Is there another coil in the same of the same type? Measure it to compare.

From the manual see which transistor and pre driver runs it. Also check the easy stuff and make sure the corresponding plug on the driver board for that coil is seated correctly

I have 3 of those particular coils running on the machine and all coils read at the same ohm which would certainly mean they are fine.
I checked all corresponding plugs and checked for corrosion and seating... Everything was fine there... I will check transistors & pre drivers.

Yep good work for fault finding..

Identify the transistors and make a note of them.

Next I would test the DC voltage at the coil too
