Bally Space invaders
« on: July 21, 2013, 05:32:30 PM »
Hi all,
Been battling with a Space invaders I bought a few months ago. Been giving me so much Sh*****t since I've had it. Long story short I have narrowed most of if not all the problems down to J4 plug on A1 board. Lots of broken or just connecting wires on the plug causing a wide range of random events. Such as credit switches not working , feature lights randomly working, coils working then not while others still do  ^&^. So while gently going over connectors gently tugging on wires J4 looks to be the culprit. the plug will need to be replaced. Can anyone out there help out with this item. Would be nice to actually get to play this machine  before I die lol.

Repin the connector. Here are the pins and associated parts. You can re use the connector housing. If the connector on the board has any corrosion, then you will need to attend to that as well.

You will also require a crimper that is usually only found overseas

1026-CT or 1028-CT can be used. I have a 1028-CT that I use for all crimping (.100, .156, .093 & .062)

Boards were all reconditioned by Beaky. So I know they are 100% good. The slide cover on this and a couple of other plugs are missing so thats also part of the problem.

No thats not the type of plug.
It's the one that the wires come in from the side and the wires are pierced onto the top of I think double wipe pins and should have a cover over the top to hold them in place.
As seen on the top left and on the display mid left of this pic

The original plugs are IDC - as per the photo  ^^^

These are a cheap and difficult part to source, and then you need the 0.100 IDC insertion tool. It is not the preferred repair. I always replace these troublesome connectors with .100 connector housings and .100 pins as per my link. The housings are a little harder to track down, but they can be sourced overseas. My advice is not to replace the connectors with IDC.

Your original connectors look like this when you remove the wires. These are the ones which have the wires connected on the top.

When you replace them your far better off replacing them with the ones Nino suggested. I've just done these ones recently.

I was fortunate enough to have someone show me how to do the first one but they are very simple once you know how.
Simply remove one wire at a time from the original connect, cut it at the previously crimped point and strip the wire to show 5mm or so of wire. Then crimp the new connector onto the wire. Once connected push the wire into the connector until you hear it clip in then remove the next wire and start again. A good tip that I was given was to always mark the original connector as you remove each wire because its very easy to get mixed up with where your up to.

To use .100 plugs will I need to change the header pins as well or will they just fit on. This thing has cost me a fortune so far considering it was supposed to be a working machine when bought.

These are the Molex connectors   http://www.greatplainselectronics.com/Category-68.asp

For better clarity in my picture this is of the next size up 0.156 connector. The process is the same though.

The header pins are fine. No need to change.
