HRP Indiana Jones restoration...
« on: September 25, 2013, 09:31:18 AM »
Hi Guys,

Its certainly been a while between posts for me - so i thought i would share a log of a recent Indiana Jones rebuild we carried out at work.

Game arrived from Perth and was well packed...

Unpacking the game highlighted a pretty rough shell, but thats ok. Some highlights...

Rough door and lower cabinet...

Faded artwork and generally poor presentation...

Head was damaged all the way around...

Moving along, the game enters teardown. Parts are stripped off the playfield and cabinet and sent out for various forms of refinishing.
The following photo highlights the rust and corrosion which affected many of the metal components in this example.

Exhibit A...

Playfield teardown under way...

Fast forward a few hours, the cabinet is gutted along with the playfield. These can go across to the paint shop to be brought to life again.

Cabinet...

Playfield straight out of the game...

Cleaned up a little...

Ready for restoration...

Cabinet is corrected and any damage major/minor is addressed, along with bringing the finish up past the acceptable factory level. Most of the time these are subtle changes;
cleaning up the aesthetics of the cabinet - and resulting in the look that I like on our projects...

Colour...

The gloss will flatten right off as the paint dries...

To bring the playfield up to speed with the rest of the project, it is also restored. We strive to correct as much of the damage as realistically possible. This is
often governed by the budget outlined with the client, or the limitations of the playfield we have to work with.

In the booth and ready to go...

**There is a major process between the before and after shots highlighted here but i have covered that in some detail in earlier posts**

Final clears are down and the playfield can be sanded and polished ready for assembly in a few days...

Back at the assembly shop - things continue to move along. Parts lists that were formed at the teardown stage have been ordered, and start to arrive.
A big thank you to Greg at RTBB for providing a truly A+ local parts service/supply. Thanks man!...

The parts rack is full of components the require attention - the only way to get this done is to grit the teeth and work through it...

Splitting up topside parts for the tumbler...

Components are assembled and bagged - and placed back on the rack until required...

Mechanical hardware...

Backbox lamp panel hardware...

Speakers are cleaned and mildly polished...

Some more small scale paint work is carried out...

Lets not forget the mini playfield. These rarely have any significant damage so this was stripped down, cleared and put back together with fresh components...

Cleared...

The last component of the cabinet is restored and installed back in place...

Wiring harness about to be re-installed...

The playfield rebuild is now underway...

Fast forward a little, the playfield is installed back in the cabinet and i can build the topside...

With the game finished, all i need to do is get it outside for some final photography. This is easier said than done in Geelong at this time of year but we have
had some nice days this week - so i made the most of it. Nothing but some shameless glamour shots from here on out. We are really proud of this game, it had a
nice list of problems, but i feel that we got it over the line.

Thanks for reading guys,

Tim

Very very nice as always. ^^^

Speaking from personal experience, it's a bit of a challenge lining up the front corner cabinet artwork on IJ isn't it?  *%*

Indeed, it is certainly one of the more difficult art packages to line up - not a great deal of fun  !!!

Nice! looks so much better with the 2 slot door

Couldn't agree more - just so much cleaner

Again, thank for the support guys and the compliments on the game. Wish it were mine as i really love this title.

Tim

Outstanding job, Timbo ! I'm not really a fan of the title (as a player), but you and your team have done a great job with this difficult project.

I think I'm the only guy who likes that 3 slot German door! I've got them on several of my games. I tend to leave the door on the game that is from the country the game was intended for - only exception are those single slot French and Belgian doors with the electronic coin acceptor.

Your IJ looks very similar to mine.. well, the before pictures, anyways :)

Very nice job!
