Project AFM?!

Just toying with the idea of getting an AFM into the collection again. Really think I'd enjoy it more second time time around. Would love an MM but they are just stupid money at the moment.

So, firstly what do you guys think a project AFM is worth? Compared to even just an AFM? Is there even a chance of getting a project AFM?

What would a project AFM be..... Would it be missing boards, buggered decals, worn pf'd, broken ramps, cracked plastics etc etc?

Still maybe a couple of months off before I really look to commit, that and I have to make sure Stern don't release an Iron Maiden pin because that's where my funds would be in an instant.

I think the restored AFM would most likely end up the same price as a MM. A project game allows you to have a very nice game when you done, but the expense would need to be checked before proceeding.

New Playfield - $1000
Cab Art and install - $1000 ish
Plastics and Ramps - $500 ish
Boards - $1000 ish

Now you need to locate a project. No dealer is going to sell an AFM project - they are too hard to locate. They would want $3000-$4000 just for a beat up game (could be right off the mark here as I have not seen a project AFM EVER sold by a dealer - but they would want A LOT for the game as they would be losing a lot of potential $ in the "reconditioning" process ).

Worst case scenario - if you were doing the restoration yourself - you are looking at a completely beat up game and then spending $4000 just on parts and labor.

I've just finished an AFM (a mates one).

New cabinet from (El_Timbo)
New playfield
New ramps
New plastics
Every post / target new
Almost all mechs replaced (where available), rebuilt, new coil sleeves etc
ColorDMD
Pinball Pro sub kit etc.
Full LEDs
The boards / transformer are about the only things not replaced.

Now thankfully this AFM was done properly  as I can't stand this game.
It plays better than new.

Now, I see people asking $10k or even $15k on eBay.  Knowing whats gone into this one and the amount of hours, yeah its probably worth it to the right collector.  Is it for sale - nope the collector loves it.

Unfortunately the exporters know the value of these machines and are asking top dollar, for project AFM's.  I doubt a dealer would get one landed for under $5k to $6k (after Euro exchange / fees / GST etc)

So do you then get an OK one second hand here for say $6k to $7k ish, then spend all the $$ getting it right?  Tough call.

I guess if someone is in a jam and letting one go cheap that might be your best option.  I think a project one sub $5k local would be a good deal for those keen.

I have seen two at a dealer, both were still $5000 with a thrashed playfield

If the PF & cab are decent i guess your half way there

Doesn't really matter what the title is, you can't underestimate how much a restoration can cost. If you do it yourself then of course it'll be cheaper than paying someone else to do it but it's still not cheap. At the end of the day though you get the game you want in the condition you want it in.

Of course mate, but who did you plan on doing the resto? Yourself or a third party? You can save dollars as a DIY, but it is a lot of time and effort for a full on ground up resto. And if you plan on using a commercial restorer, you know they have to add their slice to the overall cost. I'd estimate around 5k in parts and labour for a full on ground up resto with a new playfield and cab decals/ramps/plastics et al.

Sounds about right, they are few and far between onsite anymore and container imports are guaranteed to nearly always need a new playfield/cab decals.
