SUPER STRAIGHT ? whats that
« on: November 11, 2014, 09:38:15 PM »
Ever heard of Super Straight? nor did I till I was offered one by Ted ( pinnipop ) here in WA.
Don't know the acronym for it as SS is already taken, so I will call it SUST  %.%
Well after having this in the back burners for sometime I though I would gun ho it while RADICAL is in limbo due to possibly finding a better play field than the one I have.

Super Straight was a game made by SONIC of Spain in 1977 and is and EM style pinball. It is basically a Williams machine, as I also bought the donor ARGOSY cabinet for it to fit in as the cabinet was totally wankled as it is made from OLDSKOOL chip board and the head box is throw away stuff.
You also may have have seen the thread on PINSIDE about the " I am clearly insane " thread where Shawn ( who has helped me with art work ) is rebuilding one with acrylic, similar to the clear SURF CHAMP game that was done.

Game play - can't comment as I never played it  @.@
Play field - 10/10 as it uses some very nice techniques for longevity it really does look nice and NO wear at all. Plastics are 100% and just needs a good tickle up
Cabinet - 0/10, some nice high def screen printing, but the chip board is totally fingered and thus rebuilding new head box and dropping all the gear into a rebuilt ARGOSY cabinet as previously stated

Here are some pictures and hope to give this old girl some new life soonish, if I don't find anymore nasty surprises  !@#
I am sure the WA crew will bash it around when done,
Andy

There were a few European manufacturers around this time - Sonic, Recel and Euroflip.

I remember Lady Luck and Fandango. Sonic "Faces" was the psychedelic pick of the bunch !

Glad to see some love for a game we don't see or hear much of..

Nice game... I once had a SONIC MARS TREK.. was a great game to play and looked awesome but had the same issues you are facing, namely the particle board cabinet. My guess is that few have survived over the years.

Good to see someone giving some love to an unusual game .

Cab repaints  are a LOT of work but I have found the reward is always worth the effort.

Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.

What method are you going to use to repaint it ? ie .. spray cans, compressor or ?

What material do you use to make your stencils ?

I have 3 cab repaints waiting in the never ending queue  :lol

I need more room ! and more $$$

Cabinet is being painted with a roller and mono colour with off the shelf low sheen white, this was best match for my liking. I might have to get someone to print the artwork onto vinyl due to the fact the original was basically HD ( screen printed not stencilled )
I chose roller as it appears to give a more authentic look to original and I am really shit at spraying( still working on that one ) there is no splatter or webbing on this manufacturer, so this saves a lot of fiddly work.
I only do cabinet sprays if the cab is really bad, otherwise I stabilise the original and clear satin over the top. I like things that are old to look old. Except the play-filed of course.
If it isn't broke, it isn't pinball.

Up to now I've used the roller method too . Agree about only repainting when necessary , so far I have had 4 games where it was .. and now another 3.

Cool man, glad you are documenting the process.
I love your work and dedication to finding new ways of doing things.
Actually I just admire your commitment to the restos, I'm having difficulty motivating myself for mine.
Can't wait to have a game when you're done.

We can all do with out the pictures of the old fat surfer though.
Or is that fat old surfer?  %.% I don't know.  ^^^
