Help identifying connector pin
« on: April 03, 2015, 05:23:53 PM »
Hi again! ;)

Here is todays problem LOL..

On my Bally Strikes and Spares the right hand side outlane Special light has stopped working, the socket is ok because I was able to jump a wire from the special light on the left lane to the one on the right and it lights up. Obviously I need to test continuity but I have poor eyesight and the wires are old so I am having difficulty identifying which connector pin this wire goes to.

Is there another way to identify the connector pin other than trying to follow it or visually identify it in the back box, like a guide to what pins go where?

Help here much appreciated..

Cheers: Brettski... :)

Do you have a copy of the manual?
If not you can download it from..
http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2406

Get the version with schematics. ^^^

Also read this thread regarding poor eyesight, kind of.(If you haven't already.)

likely to be a lamp driver transistor or scr on the lamp matrix board, you can get this info also from the downloaded manual at the internet pinball database

Thanks heaps guys,

I have the manual with schematics and trying to make some sense of it now, not much of an electronics tech! but should be able to work this out, I have just recently ( a few weeks ago) re crimped all the connectors using the ratchet type crimper and all went quite well. I am more inclined to think it is what Studley67 said about the lamp driver transistor or scr on the lamp matrix board. I know what a transistor is but what is an SCR? excuse my ignorance please. also what is the best way to test or determine which component is at fault?

Thanks again,

Brettski... :)

As I am finding, it could be anything from a component on the board, bad/dry solder join on the connector board, dtrty molex pin in the plug, lamp socket needing replacing or a blown bulb

But hey, gotta love old Ballys

Thanks studley67 that was helpful, got somewhere to start now..

Pop Bumper Pete, you are right about the old Bally's I am having fun but being tested a lot.. lol

I am an old Ballarat boy, went to North Tech and lived in Wendouree, got a bit cold so I moved north.  #@#

I remember as a kid going to Kieth's pinny parlour in Lydiard st, I even won a pinny at time zone at Wendouree Village back in 1979 (Jungle Princess)

Stay warm  ^^^ and thanks for your help guy's, I will keep you updated.

Cheers: Brettski... :)

Just also want to check that you've run a system diagnostic as outlined on pages 13-14 of the manual.

To confirm lamp out and not a stuck/non working switch.

on second thoughts,,if the other special lane is lit then it should not be a board issue but more likely a wiring issue

Studley67,

I have a friend who is able to help with soldering parts for me and sourcing them shouldn't be an issue so if you do get the time to identify which scr and transistor relate to that lamp it really would be much appreciated.  ^^^

Is that right, well then I will try and identify the connector pin first and check for continuity and track from there first..

Thank you, I was wondering about this but because they alternate I thought they might be different.. hmmm

i do not want to come accros rude but if you can see two wires on on of the terminals on the working side lamp, then of of those two wire will go to the other side lamp.call parallel conection.not 100% sure.i a have had too many beers to start looking at wiring diagrams today.you will have it sorted soon. ^^^edited
