Kingpin #8 found
« on: May 28, 2015, 08:19:01 AM »
worthy of documenting

from the new owner:

The lost Kingpin is found!! We all know eight Kingpins exist. Seven of them are more or less accounted for but one of them has remained hidden until now so I'll call this one number eight. It's been in storage and unplayed since before the year 2000. When I took the backglass off a little tag with a number "8" written on it fell out so maybe this one is production number eight.
The condition is incredible. Playfield is like glass. There is no shooter lane wear. Pop bumper biscuits are like day one. Cabinet is 99% with just one teeny tiny scrape on one side of the backbox. It even has an original keychain plastic. This thing plays lightning fast. The Capcom flippers make Bally/Williams games fell antique. Ramp shots are so fast you can't see the ball. Audits tell the story. Game shows only 97 plays. Shooter lane and playfield drain have absolutely no wear so I believe it. I gave it a good basic cleaning, put in new balls and flipper rubber and that's it. It has zero errors and plays like it just came out of the box. Here's a full photo set, Enjoy the pictures!

It was owned by a collector who was very private. He bought in the late 90's and tucked it away until now. It's cool that there are some collectors like this otherwise we would never be able to find a hidden treasure. It's nice to know there are still some awesome finds out there.

A pretty special find. While this is the pin I need to complete the Capcom collection, I can't really call it a grail pin as the value makes it something I could never buy.

But if a remake comes about, I certainly will have my hand up. I shared some emails with this game's designer (Mark Ritchie, brother of Steve) just recently about Kingpin. It is something that could possibly be produced.

It would be great if this game was produced. Fantastic find.

Who owns the Capcom pinball rights?

Great question. Can't be Gene Cunningham as he lost everything..

Likely PPS as they bought a huge amount of stuff at the G.C. auction and the Capcom rights may well have been part of the sale - who knows?

They bought a huge amount of parts, but I'm not sure they own the rights ? I might do some digging as I know someone who will know for sure.

I think I have been in contact with the same person...very muddy waters. it may very well be right that Gene Cunningham owned just parts as you said. The rights themselves might even have remained with the now de-registered US company that held the Capcom pinball business. Even if that were so, then the copyright for artwork could be somewhere else...complicated stuff.

Thought I might check some patent stuff from Capcom Coin-op but no leads to any current owners there.

If you remember playing pinball in the 70s you were having a good time.
If you don't remember anything,  then read about it here,

someone posted on Pinside that they asked Rick from Planetary if they were going to make this and Rick responded with a "possibly" and pretty sure Rick does own the rights.

I have had a discussion with Rick myself and he implied he did have the rights. We'll see if this turns out to be correct, or if enough of the rights are held in one place to be able to make the repro.
