Anyone know about the diode banks? I'm hoping a IN4004 is suitable but only because I already have a heap of them.

Is either more suitable than the other? The factory diodes are 1N914 from memory. Fast switching germanium or something like that. Replace with 1N4148 as they are fast switching diodes suitable for the switch matrix.
Higher current capability.. even better
