Evel Knievel High End Restoration
« on: May 02, 2018, 09:45:52 PM »
The story is about as long as the wait time to get this far ! The machine originally came from NSW and was dropped off at my home when I was working from my garage. This is the LAST of the games from 2013 !

Background

This is a Holy Grail game for the collector. He wants it restored to my "Nearly In Box" standard.

Condition

Cabinet - 6/10 - Sections have been repainted (head) and there's damage where the head is bolted to the base.
Backglass - 9/10. Perfect
Playfield - 7/10 - Mylar. Faded.
Electrical - 6/10 - Boards need work or replacement.

Starting point

The game was dropped off with the head still bolted on, but hanging in the breeze ;

Here it is in the factory ;

While waiting in the resto Q - CPR release the Backglass, playfield and plastic set. Sometimes, patience is a virtue..

The door is "poor"..

The back needs to be repaired

Here's where the cabinet colours are matched. I remove the door surround, and the original colours and finish are there - exactly as there were on the production line ;

The lower cabinet is taken to the expert paint supplier to match for me

Once the paint is purchased, I start the repairs on the back of the cabinet. I use long screws and glue.

Headbox had some delamination - So I glue and clamp overnight.

Then the first coat of primer goes down so I can see when needs to be repaired prior to base coat. Then the base is painted.

I used @Pinball Pimp stencils again. Here's the RED first

BLUE on the headbox ;

Here's the BLUE stencil over the red painted areas.

BLUE applied

Almost done..

The neck are painted BLACK

Now I'm done !

This project is put aside for the moment, as I continue to take advantage of the weather and paint more cabinets  ^&^

I remember this being one of the first pins I played here in Perth.
It was at Cordingley's surf shop Scarborough.
So many good memories.
Nice work El Nino and thank you
If it isn't broke, it isn't pinball.

Great work Nino, that cabinet looks fantastic. You can’t beat the nostalgia value of a game like Evel Knievel either.   ^^^

That is stunning artwork on the cabinet, the artist had talent. What glue do you use in the cabinet resto, Nino? Does Aquadere do the job?

Structural repairs - Liquid nails. Cosmetic repairs such as delaminations - Aquadere PVA is fine.

No. Not on this example. I don't think white cabinets had the yellow speckle.

Update - This machine is another "non financial" game, so updates will re-commence once financial.

Hi Nino, I’m finally gearing up to paint the cosmic princess.  Been many years since I repainted a cabinet. I’ll be using automotive acrylics in a gravity fed gun. Would I be correct in saying I would need less than a litre of base coat and about 250ml of colours? I’m guessing you never clearcoat your solid state cabinets? Is there much of a ‘lip’ left when the stencils are removed or do you try to only apply minimal colour coverage?

Remove the stencils within 5 minutes. My rule is to remove the stencils immediately after I've cleaned the gun.

1 Litre should be fine for base coat. That would be a mist coat, and 3 thin coats, building up to the sheen required. If you are painting the inside to the floor, you should JUST make it. Do the outside first.
250ml for the red will be fine. You may need slightly more for the yellow.

for the stencil colours - Go thin coats to the point where the colour is 100% what you want and not a drop more. Do not go heavy just to build it up. I do a mist and thin two coats MAX.

Unfortunately, this restoration became unfinancial, and will be a parked restoration until I finish off the backlog. It will be completed and sold as a High End Restoration most likely in 2019.

That’s a shame but I guess also a great opportunity for someone to grab a stunning game when it’s done.
