Funhouse - techo question re Rudy's eyes
« on: October 12, 2009, 04:34:06 PM »
Should I be concerned?

Yesterday Rudy’s eyes started to shake from side to side fairly vigorously as opposed to just once moving to the left or right. I played a couple of games and it corrected itself and seems OK.

Is this the start of something that I should maybe check and get on top of now or maybe was it just a bad day for Rudy?
My game has never done this before and I did have the playfield up earlier that day ( thinking something in his head may have temporarily moved out of alignment- like Rollerballs head  :lol)

Thanks in advance

Can't comment on the Rollerball comparison, but I take your word for it.

While Rudy does have a mind of his own, the description does not sound like anything I have seen - but bear in mind, he is possessed and quite likely did this to scare you.

Seriously (well, the above was serious, but sort of more seriously) it does not sound right (but is does sound like fun). When you get the trap door in multiball and he screams, I think he does do a vigorous shake, but I am always laughing too loud at that time to have paid attention - I'll go and try a few games and report back.

Well - its confirmed - Rudy's eyes aint moving left and right now , eveything else is OK.

Can ANYONE that has some knowledge of what may be wrong or where I should start or how easy it is to get his face off please reply for me as I would like to have this right again by Saturday for my mini meet before Tonys meet ( ooooooops - cat , bag , anyone  !@) )

I would probably remove the entire assembly..  4 screws for the face covers (takes these off first) then I think its 6 screws underneith (4 for head, 2 for jaw?! I think) and it then can be lowered out.  The loom should have plugs.

Without looking I would guess that either a plunger or the plastic linkage has gone!.

Had VERY little time tonight but I took his face off and was able to manually move the eyelids left / right by hand.
All the 'couplings' are intact ( there is like a steel hook from either side that hooks into a central nylon plate, all that is rock solid )

There appears to be a couple of VERY small coils in his head - will see them better when I get it all off /out.
One coil for each direction?

Tell me this aint gunna be electrical please - they still 'shake' they just dont move all the way left or right in gameplay - but do so EASILY manually.

Unfortunately it does sound electrical...is there a switch meant to be triggered by the move from left to right or vice-versa?

Thinking about it some more - 'shaking' sounds like a coil is not firing correctly, or perhaps the two coils firing rapidly in succession. Or possibly some sort of switch (eg EOS) is being triggered early.

Just some ideas that might help you to look for the cause of the problem.

Sounds like the coil or the connection to the coil.

Thanks all.

Had a spare arvo and I pulled Rudy out of the game.
It was 1 x wire snapped off one of the small coils.

For those of you that havent seen this little guy in 'frankenstein mode' here he is ....

While I was in there I re-soldered all the other wires as some were 'just' hangin on, so I made em all nice and rock solid.
Also took the gears apart and cleaned em with wax/grease reomver & a toothbrush.
I also checked the 2 nylon connectors in this Rudy head and they are perfect, one is brand spankin new  *)*

All perfect again now - eyes now close and move left/right.

Thanks again to all that replied ^^^
