Ive  just had a fiddle with the plugs to the mpu and its fired up 7 flashes and played a  game but now it just cuts out randomly. Would that suggest it may be a plug/pin problem or something more sinister ?

Thats good, suggest the first that you stated a pin/plug problem, was it PLUG J4 on the CPU?  This supplies the 5 volts required for the CPU to run.

Clean the pins on MPU J4 with 360 Grit sandpaper.

Are they tarnished ?

Is there any corrosion on the MPU ?

Tried the MPU on my friends 8ball today, played one game and the game cut out. Turned machine off then on again same thing happened. The board has been modified by a previous owner with a off the board battery.Pins seem to be OK. The solder on the back of most of the pins seem to be a dark  colour, maybe corrosion but not sure. Hope this helps. Cheers Les. (ps, his 8ball has new alltek MPU so it works fine)

Id say replace the pins on MPU J4 with new ones, and maybe check the pins in the J4 connector in the wiring harness as well. As strangeways said, you can sandpaper the pins to see if that fixes the problem, but its really only a short term fix. replacing them is the best way to go for long term reliability. Thats what id be doing if it was my MPU board.

Cheers... Mitch

Update on 8ball. Well I had the j4 pins replaced on the MPU board.Turned it on ..... 7 flashes, game powers up all good. Played four or five games, playing good....until  the credit knocker went thump as normal. Lost power to displays and ball wouldnt kick out. This kept on happening, until finally it would lose power during a game, as previously discussed earlier in this thread. What do i do now?

Sounds to me that the issue could still be J4 as the machine played well for four games. You say the pins have been replaced - what about the connector itself ? You should unsolder the old one and replace it. Pins and connectors should be done together.

Failing that - reseat all the socketed ICs. Be CAREFUL when removing the 5101, as it is prone to static. Clean all other connectors - "dark" color is not a sign of healthy connectors.

Failing that - could very well be a PIA - they can be swapped over.
