A few years ago in a place called Chernobyl, there was a small industrial accident which ejected tones of black dust over europe. This is the dust inside the euro machines. To verify, you can use a tool called a geiger counter to detect any of this dust, also known as plutonium.

If that's the case we're all finished...

Seriously though, I reckon it comes from the sleeves inside the coils which acts as a dry lubricant...

High voltage circuits also attract this crap too...

I bought some ectromechanicals from europe , they were filthy black with the stuff. Its definetely not the familiar carbon smell with electro,s ,but rather irritating. (I started coughing near them) ,your theory(cave) the storage warehouses in industrial areas sounds correct,my machines ,were stored for 30+ years in the same warehouse.

stored for 30 years. Now that would be exciting to open up those pieces of history. that would have been a great buzz.

Now, u can say u have 30 yr old (minimum) 30 yr old black dust. Cool. AND some really nice pins.  ^^^

Also, Finny wrote the funny bit about Chernobyl with the black dust etc. probably a bit of truth to it. !

Might do a search on pinball parlours in Russia for the hell of it . See what i can come up with  ^^^
