Playboy 1978 outhole switch challenges?
« on: June 20, 2010, 07:08:15 PM »
If I could get some help it would be greatly appreciated.

Initial fault was that after 1st ball was lost, soleniod would not energise and load 2nd ball. Game stalled.
Checked switch and manual over rode switch by pushing contacts together. Then it loaded ball and worked well so assumed switch needed cleaning.
Disassembled switch and cleaned and reinstalled. Changed diode also.

Reinstalled and symptoms now loads ball twice but does not come out.

Is there anyting special about the diode or could something upstream be confusing the matter?

Did you install the diode the correct way round and also test it before installing?

Normally, if a switch just needs cleaning or adjusting i do it in situ, querky things can start heppening once you disassemble as youve found out.

... If it aint broke... and all that

Go into the switch test on the diagnostics (Red button on the coindoor). Remove the ball from the machine, and make sure all the targets are up. The number of the closed switch will be in the credit display.

That's where I would start.

Clean and gap the trough switch - double check it is working in the diag by dropping the ball into the trough

Switch the machine off - refit all the MPU connectors.

Switch on and test.

Thanks Retropin and Strangeways,

Will try thanks.

In terms of the diode direction, My understanding is that the diode is a one way valve therefore to get the power to the switch contact side, it can only go one way can it not?

Ie if the wire is the wrong way around the switch would not close the circuit would it?

If a diode was installed incorrectly then the switch matrix would cause all sorts of problem for that row and column.

Nino,

Just to remove risk going forward, I am keen to replace this diode with the right one (in case it's not now).
Can you tell me what type / number to buy?

the diodes used in all pinball switch matrixes are very generic, general purpose diodes used for literally thousands of things. Original will probably be IN4001 or IN4004 but IN4007 will work equally well.

You can buy a bulk bag from Jaycar of 100 X IN4004 for $5.95 (Jaycar #ZR-1005) - or they are $0.50 each which is very bad value.

Original will probably be IN4001 or IN4004 but IN4007

Just to be a pedantic twit, because I can, the diode designation is actually  1N400x.

The 1 signifies the number of junctions in the semiconductor device, one for a diode.  Transistors, which have two junctions, when following this naming scheme are 2Ns.

That said, I'll get of the soap box and crawl back into my hole  !!@

You are competely right BUT - try going into Jaycar and asking the clerk for a "One N 4001" and see what strange stare you get. If you said "I would like an IN4001" he will have a better chance of knowing what you mean (maybe).

In all products I design and build I always designate this part as "IN400X"

I agree that you are correct however....

I have never noticed them being listed as an IN4001, I have ordered 1N4001.
I just checked over some of my part lists from 10 years ago from some of the old light controllers i designed and sure enough 1N4001 is listed.

Just because Jaycar employs pimply faced technically incompetent nongs does not permit me to use the wrong part number - nor to cease being a pedantic twit!

Just out of interest try a search on the Jacay site for IN400 and you yield no result, on the other hand search for 1N400 and you are rewarded with a selection of diodes! Perhaps you and I are both being too hard on Jaycar employees?

Took the wires off and now just want to get it right.

I have an orange wire and a white (with pink line) and a diode (exactly as specified here thanks).

A, B and C on the three terminals of the switch. (see photos).

Orange wire was on A, C is other side of the switch and B, I think is where the white / pink wire went with the diode between it and C with the diode band closest to C.

Can anyone confirm which way the wires go?

Cleaned and gapped the switch in anticipation.

Once complete I will do the switch test Nino.

I just had a look at mine.

Orange is A

The diode goes from B to C with the banded side going to B

The White / pink wire goes to C

Hope it helps you!

Thanks Ken,

Hopefully this fixes and if problem is upstream I will contact you and bring the boards over.

Appreciate your help.
