Fitting a Metal Lift Trim
« on: June 25, 2010, 02:26:40 PM »
Trying to replace my lift on my S&S backglass, how do i get this to happen? It is a very tight fit and i feel a bit worry that it is going to chip or break some of the glass.

How do you guys do it? Do i slightly flex open the metal? Grease up the glass with detergent?

Have a look and see if there is any tape in the channel. There "should be". Heat up the outside with a hair dryer and slowly pull the channel away from the glass. You might find three pieces of self adhesive felt. It is really easy to heat up the adhesive.

I would probably be inclined to let the backglass warm up to normal temperature before putting heat on it with the hairdryer.

I have heard  of stories of BG's shattering just from the warmth of your fingers especially on these cold winter mornings.

!@# no tape to be seen and no adhesive at all  !@#

I dont have a mallet, should i tempt fate and use a normal hammer with padding between hammer and trim?? Lots of rags for example?

Without the tape the channel should be able to go on the glass VERY easily - ie there is no way it would hold on.  You should need the black double sided foam to make the fit tight.  Sounds like you have the wrong size channel for your glass !@#

cheers

It does look tight...is it supposed to be this tight? Definatley the 1/8 in width.
