SUPER CAPACITORS FOR BATTERY BACKUP
« on: July 14, 2010, 10:50:07 PM »
Ive installed a super cap in a few Bally CPUs as a backup battery and they have worked great is there any way the same could be done for other pinballs???    Like williams games?    5v goes to the 5101ram chip and the batteries are used to hold the memory would it be possible to wire a super capacitor to the + and negative of the ram?   The 5v will charge the cap while the games on and the Cap will hold the rams memory while its off

 @@^

Looking at a system 3 board if i remove the diode thats running between the battery and the 5101 ram the current should reach the capacitor enabling it to charge then keep 5v to the memory when its off !@#

Yes.. automatically put super caps on all my SS machines... they hold charge really well too. Fired up a game that had not been turned on for nearly a year and the high score was proudly displayed much to my suprise

I've installed them on a few Stern and Bally MPU boards without any problems. Should work on Williams games.

Dont have any WMS machines in the collection at present, but the cap is put in place of the +ve and -ve terminals of the battery backup
