COULD LEDS CAUSE LAMP DRIVER PROBLEMS?
« on: September 18, 2010, 10:44:36 AM »
Hi guys just a quick question last night before installing LEDs into my firepower project the lamp matrix was working 100%. A few minutes after installing the LEDs one of throws locked on.   No big deal until this morning I switched it on and I now have two dead rows???

Any thought guys or should I just take out the LEDs

A possibility. Best way to determine if the LEDs are interfering is to remove all LEDs and replace with #47. If it is all "ok", then change back to LEDS "one by one".

Hey Daniel,
I had a weird thing on Gorgar when I replaced lamps with LEDS, all lamps were working prior to change, then after change had a complete row which would not work, ended up finding a dud diode on one of the lamps from that row in backbox.

Cheers Dave

Thanks for the advice I'll try both ideas

I should add that I only put the LEDS in playfield, and had not touched any lamps in backbox.

Funny one this. I put LEDs everywhere in my Firepower with absolutely no problems, so what I'm, suggesting is speculation at best, but I reckon  it might just be right.

What's going on is that the lamp matrix diodes have deteriorated over time, a quick google didn't really reveal anything on diode life expectancy, but the pin is at least 30 years old and for the entire time it's on the diode is doing it's job either in game play or attract mode.  The job of the diode is to block the current flow in one direction. As the diode heads towards failure this ability to block will lessen.

LEDs operate significantly faster than incandescent globes. as they don't have to warm up, and there luminosity is still pretty good at low currents. So a bit of current leakage won't be noticed on an incandescent globe but will (might?) show up on a LED.

SO, if my theory is correct, what I'd do is go to the brightest looking LED that is permanently on and replace the matrix diode associated with that LED. If I'm right the LED should function normally but the others will remain on.  For a few minutes work and a new diode maybe worth a try?  Let us know if this works out.

BTW this does not really provide a satisfactory explanation of why it's only a couple of rows - I have no idea on that. Head box to play field lamps are handled identically I think (it would be possible to change the polling to bias an entire row or column, but I very much doubt this is done).

Hey Daniel did you ever resolve this or prove or disprove the Led theory?

Be handy to know before I LED Up the Fp one day in the future.....

Hi Pete
If actually forgot about this issue as the game is back in pieces.  But I think good old days is most likely correct about a faulty diode I may have even bent on end shorted out the driver transistor maybe?

Hey Daniel,

yeah possible to bend something when changing lots of lamps for Leds,

I dont think the Rows and columns have current sensitive circuitry built in thats a bit hi tech for a sys6 board..

You will have to get the old girl going again...the drop target version would be cool to play....
