When is "next weekend"??
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:13:55 PM »
Had some confusion earlier in the week when my mates wife emailed me on Monday "We're free next weekend, want to get together Saturday night?"

So, when is "next weekend"??

"This weekend" would be the weekend of the current week (of the Monday) that the email was sent.

"Next weekend" would be the weekend AFTER "this weekend"..

I'd take it the way Nino explained next weekend is two weekends from whenever your told.  But dates are so much easier

OK, so on Monday, if I said "Next Friday" - do I mean the one in four days, or in eleven days time? How is the one in four days time not the "next" one we are having.

Or if we skip a weekend per Nino and Daniel, that makes "next year" 2012 using the same logic (ie skip the one coming).

If it was the Friday four days from Monday it would be just Friday not next Friday but good point on next year beige 2012.

It's funny how something like thAt makes sence until some one make a point like that then confuses the shot out of you

My understanding is that the term 'next weekend' is ambiguous unless given context.

As Nino said, if you refer to 'this weekend' then you are referring to the coming weekend (on a weekday) or the current weekend (if in it). If you use the term 'next weekend' in this context it will refer to the weekend after 'this weekend'.

However, if you just use the term 'next weekend', logically you are referring to the coming weekend. That is the plain meaning of 'next'.

So the safest way is to give a date...

Exactly - The best option is to mention the date, or specify "Not this weekend coming, the one after"

quite a funny subject really.
I agree with Nino, but.....if I was asked on a Monday about next weekend, I would assume they mean the first coming weekend.
However, if I was asked on a Friday about next weekend, then I would think they mean the one in 8 days time.
 @.@
Definately dates required to stop the confusion. ^^^
Ya just gotta luv an EM.

If it is currently a weekend then it is the next one.

If it is during the week, this weekend is the one coming up
and next weekend would be the one after.

No way next weekend means the the next weekend coming,

Hmm, that's an interesting statement.

How do you go navigating - see the map below - according to that logic, if you were told to "take the next exit" at Point A, you would take route 20, right, skipping Route 43?

Actually I think he meant that the next weekend is always the first weekend to come, rather than the second weekend to come.

Sorry, I see, but funnily enough, "No way next weekend means the the next weekend coming" could be seen as meaning either that "There is no way next weekend means the the next weekend coming" meaning it must be the one after next or "No way next weekend means the the next weekend coming", agreeing with the idea that the next weekend to come is "next weekend". Sort of helps show the ambiguity.

Not really serious, just a bit of fun. My wife has always insisted that the weekend coming is "This weekend" and the one after that is "next weekend". That's what my mate's wife meant too. At the office it was split exactly 50/50 on it's meaning.
