Home theater amps

Over the last couple of years I have been slowly upgrading my home theater

Nice speakers, bum rumbling subwoofer, big screen TV

Now I am thinking of upgrading the amp
I am currently using an older (way before HDMI) Yamaha 5.1 channel amp
Nothing wrong with my setup, just toying with upgrading and passing the old setup to the kid

Any recommendations for home theater amplifiers?
I do not want to spend over $2000

Pete

Really, the first question is what is the budget?? Then people can let you know their thoughts of good equipment to suit the budget.

Shouldn't have to spend over $2k, there are lots of mid level models for around the $1000-$1500 mark.

check out onkyo range. I have had these amps for years, and tend to update when the warranty runs out (used to be 5 years).

I generally buy below the $2K which gets their upper models if you haggle at JB's.

I see they have models out now with 9.2. I think the speakers are the thing now that could blow out your budget LOL
Still loving my Metallica Premium

I have had Onkyo as well as Yamaha and Dennon, can't go wrong with them they are good solid amps but Onkyo are my fav.
Don't know about 9.2 though, talk about overkill. Most peoples home theatres aren't even set up to run 7.1 properly let alone 9.2. My amp is capable of running 7.2 but seeing as I don't need another sub and don't have at least 3-4 feet behind me to run proper 7.1 so I just use 5.1 and it's fine.

Pete,

I run Krix commercial cinema speakers in my home including subwoofer (same as gold class etc) and Can tell you the best amps in my opinion are the Denon high end. I know you are only talking around $2000 but a second hand one a few years old would be a much better purchase than a cheaper new one for $2000. I have trialed others over the years, Sony, Onkyo, Yamaha and even some other high end separates but I can tell you honestly the Denon big boys are the best. I run a separate amp for the subwoofer of course.

If you require any more info let me know.

Jeff

to refine what I (think) I need
I do not want bells and whistles, I do not want it to make it sound like I am in a hall or at a rock concert
I do not need to have all the inputs, I currently only have my Blu-Ray player, over Xmas I trashed the VCR (not having used it for years) and put away the Laser Disc (poor thing, need a hand to open the tray)

I think there is a home show on in Melbourne Labor day or easter, and I think they have a seperate section for electronic stuff

only aiming for 7.1,
I saw a Yamaha amp 11.2, overkill for my place

Will take a closer look at the Denon

I think one remote controls the other remote to control.. ..
