Sound problem
« on: August 27, 2011, 09:40:15 PM »
this machine is really starting to shit me, lol. anyways, today the machine stoped playing sound but not all sounds.
it plays the opening music, bumper sounds, but it does not play the continous track any more or the spinner sounds or finishing sounds. the game plays fine but the sound is playing up. now if you can treat me like a noob and talk in simpleton talk i might be able to keep up. im guessing it is a board problem, is it part of the main board or a seperate board i can photo the boards i think it is if yo ucan identify it? but what would you sugest is the problem? cheers guys
and yes its for my shitty rock encore machine lol.

I would guess there is a separate sound board. If so, it is probably a bad connection to the sound board that is causing the issue. Well, that's the easy problem to fix so check that out first.

Hey Jason
The board in your first photo is your sound board the second photo looks to be your power supply for your sound board.

If you have some sOunds id rule out your power supply as the fault.

First thing to check is the connectors they are at the end of there lifesPan even if they were well loomed after try removing and re seating these a couple of times if this fixes the problem may be worth replacing the pins.  Prick of a job but only needs to be done Once

ok thats the board i thought it was, i was also wondering as the rock encore came out as a upgrade for the Rock machine, mine is not an upgrade, but from what i have found the upgrade as far as to playing side was sound upgrade, assuming they used the same boards could my machine be playing off the sound on one board? meaning maybe im just getting the sound a rock machine had before an upgrade to rock encore? its just funny it plays certain things, the parts that are playing are consistant.
i will check like yo usaid above, also what is that board i listed that isnt connected to anything?

You could check the 5v on the sound board. System 80 can have problem with the variable resistor on the power supply which when faulty can can make the 5v go up to 7-8volts and weird problems will occur. Also worth reseating the connectors as Daniel mentioned. System 80 can also have other problems due to grounding issues on the boards so might have to also check this.

also on the board you guys are saying is power supply board, what are those little square red buttons? they look like little push switches?

could you explain on how i would do this if possible. cheers.

and again sorry for what may seem like stupid questions, i am completely new to this side of pinball. thank you for every bodies patience and i am learning something new here which is great

No problems. The red buttons are test buttons. You can push these are the board should perfrom a test. Is there any other boards in the backbox which have not been photographed yet? There should be another board for the power supply.
The small board by itself is a reset/watchdog timer board. If the game was to lock up on site, it could potential burnt out a coil. If the reset board does not detect the CPU is running(and locked up) it will reset the entire game.

You will need a multimeter to check the 5v power supply.

ok so i can push that button and what happens on test? on my spacehawks machine it has test switch o nthe coin door that i can cycle through to test lights sound coils and what not, is this just where gtb have their test switch o nthe board its self? is that what those switches do?
there is one other i didnt take photo of, to me i thought it might have been an amplifier? for the speakers? as its just a heat sink with wires to it, and sits beside that first board pictured above.
the game is playing fine, other than just certain sounds not playing, it isnt locking up or anything.
i have no problem with testing 5v other than what part of the board i get the 5v reading at,lol
hopefully connectors are a problem on the sound board i at least know how to do that, cheers

im guessing what dddstoys is saying is the the sound board has a few channels to it, and doesnt just come out of the sound board through just one chanel or one set of wires, so if im getting only certain sounds playing as normal that connection is good, but on another channel that the other sounds arent being played because of dodgy connection?

also reseat the connectors on the cpu, there might be a bad connection on the cpu end.

are all the sounds that are working correct? or is it playing the wrong sounds?

this is what confuses me. the sounds that do work are correct and are consistant, and whilst the sound track that usually plays during the game currently isnt. all the other game plays sounds like bumper sounds, target sounds, all work perfectly,
the game will play the opening game starting song, but it wont play the finish song or music track during game play but will play bumper sounds and so on.

could you please point out which is the cpu, ill give that a try. cheers
edit had a think, the cpu is the entire board isnt it? the 4th pic is the cpu? i was looking for a cpu simular to pc lol, then i remembered cpu's werent that small in the 80's, lol

You havent changed any settings at all have you?
It is possible that you may have turned off "continuous sounds" by going through the coin door switches... check your manual and go through the settings to make sure.... would be nice if this was a real easy fix for you
